Victorians to pay more for rego, but get flexible payment option
Victorians motorists will be hit with higher vehicle registration fees as the government looks for an extra $120 million to fund a new licencing and registration system.
There will be some relief for drivers, however, with Treasurer Kim Wells set to announce the availability of flexible registration payments for Victorian drivers as part of the Baillieu Government’s Budget update later today.
Victoria is currently the only state where motorists are forced to pay their annual rego in one lump sum. According to a News Limited report, the revised regulations will give motorists the option of making their registration payments quarterly. Up until now, only concession card holders have been eligible to make half-yearly rego repayments in Victoria.
The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), which has been campaigning for the introduction of a flexible payment option for motorists and automotive businesses for years, says it welcomes any change to the current system, including quarterly payments.
The overhaul of the licencing system follows last month’s report by ombudsman George Brouwer, who said the program needed an immediate $120 million funding injection to avoid wasting the $52 million already invested into it.
Mr Brouwer has been calling for a new system for Victoria in more than six years.
The new licencing system will reportedly incorporate facial recognition technology, which should eliminate the possibility of creating duplicate licences.
