Mercedes-Benz working on inductive charging for EV

Mercedes-Benz parent company, Daimler, is working on a new inductive charging system for electric vehicles that does without the cord, or the need to plug into a wall socket.

Called the ‘Effizienzhaus-Plus mit Elektromobilitat’ project (translating to ‘House-Plus efficiency with electric mobility’), a family of four will live in an efficient home to test out the technology for 15 months, using a special Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-CELL.

The A-Class will be fitted with a charging coil that allows the on-board batteries to be recharged when the vehicle is parked over an inductive charging pad, via an electromagnetic field.

The driver will be guided to position their car over the pad for the inductive charge to take place. The system is completely cordless and does not require the driver to set up the vehicle for charging externally at all. Herbert Kohler, head of e-drive and future mobility at Daimler AG, said in a recent statement,

“We have already demonstrated the essential feasibility of the technology. The experience in day-to-day use will now provide important pointers for the further course of development. A number of technical and financial issues also need to be resolved before we can really assess the marketability of this technology.”

To make the project more environmentally focused, the house the family will live in will be capable of producing more energy than it consumes, using various technologies such as solar power. The excess energy generated by the house will be enough to recharge the vehicle.

Daimler aims to test out the functionality of these systems and how well they work in the real world during the 15-month test. The family will move in and testing will begin in March.
