Supercar crash destroys 8 Ferraris in Japan

This is not the way you want a Sunday drive to end. Yesterday morning 14 cars were involved in a highway pile-up, resulting in the destruction of eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini, three Mercedes-Benz vehicles... and a Toyota Prius.

The epic accident occurred yesterday at around 10:15am on the Chugoku Expressway in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Up to 10 people were reportedly taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Two Ferrari 355s, two Ferrari 360s, two Ferrari 430s (one of which was a rare Scuderia variant), and a Ferrari 512 were totalled in what has been described as one of the most expensive pileups in history.

Sitting rather innocently in the middle of it all was a Toyota Prius, which, by the looks of it, suffered the least damage of all the cars involved. A Nissan GT-R and Lamborghini Diablo were less fortunate.

The official cause of the accident is yet to be determined, however it's understood a Ferrari clipped the median strip while travelling at around 140km/h. This set off a chain reaction of crashes, spanning some 400 metres down the highway.

The total price of the cars involved is beyond $3 million.
