Audi to revamp entire design philosophy

The current design of all Audi vehicles has been critised for being, more or less, the same across the showroom floor. The Audi A4 shares a very similar face to the Audi A6, and the Audi Q5 looks remarkably similar to the bigger Audi Q7. That's all about to change though, according to Audi's design director.

Speaking with Autocar at a recent event in London, Audi design director Stefan Sielaff said that an all-new styling language is under development. The revamp will introduce more versatility across the range to be better distinguish SUVs from sedans, hatchbacks and sports cars.

To do this, Audi design departments have developed a new design strategy called AQR (Audi sedans and hatches, Quattro SUVs, and R sports cars). All of these segments will adopt a new design language to better separate the market segments. Sielaff said,

"We know that some people think our saloons look too alike and are well into a project to change that, we will mainly do that with the proportions of those cars. And it will mean differences, say in the way the headlights meet up with the grille; the design details will be different."

One of the elements Sielaff highlighted was the front grille design. He says sedans will feature a more sloped grille while the SUVs will present an upright style, for example. Headlight design and body contours will also be separated by distinguishing themes.

It's unknown when these changes will come into effect exactly, but the change is expected to be welcomed with open arms by consumers. Sielaff also spoke about the possibility of further separating the designs of the range, especially with future hybrids and electric vehicles. We will have to wait and see just how different these designs will be.

What do you think? Would you like Audi to adopt all-new styling themes for its various models? Or do you prefer the current setup which, perhaps, ensures consistency with the brand and makes every product an unmistakable Audi?
