2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet revealed

The first pictures and details of the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet – the drop-top version of the German sports car maker’s latest-generation sports car icon – have been revealed.

Porsche is spruiking an all-new fabric roof that it says is lighter than before with a cleaner-looking design that helps to retain more of the 911’s classic roofline when in place.

The unveiling of the 2012 Porsche 911 Carerra Cabriolet models coincides with the international launch of the new series 911 coupe – codenamed 991. The convertible is expected to debut at the 2012 Detroit motor show, four months before it goes on sale in Australia.

As with the coupe, which arrives locally in March 2012, the Cabriolet’s body has a longer wheelbase than before and combines aluminium and steel for its construction, with the base Carrera and Carrera S models powered by the same engines.

The entry-level 911 Cabriolet, the Carrera, features a 257kW 3.4-litre flat six-cylinder engine sending its power to the rear wheels via Porsche’s new seven-speed manual gearbox.

The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is serviced by a 294kW 3.8-litre flat six that’s also mated as standard to the manual, with a seven-speed ‘PDK’ dual-clutch auto optional for both models.

Prices for the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet increase over the model it replaces. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet base model rises from $245,300 to $255,100, with the S variant increasing from $275,100 to $288,300.
