Ferrari plans super-exclusive collectors’ club

They say money can’t buy you happiness, and it certainly seems even those who can afford a Ferrari have been upset by the world’s most recognisable automotive brand.

Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has told industry journal Automotive News Europe that the Italian marque is looking to establish a new collectors’ club after a number of Ferrari owners complained about missing out on the limited edition 2010 Ferrari SA Aperta.

The Ferrari SA Aperta (pictured above) was a convertible version of the company’s 599 GTB coupe unveiled at an invite-only event at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance.

The $550,000 model, however, was limited to only 80 units – as a nod to the 80th anniversary of Pininfarina, the styling house responsible for most Ferrari designs since the 1950s.

Automotive News reports that the new club is likely to be open only to those who own at least five Ferraris, of which there are more than 300 according to the company, and give them first option on the brand's most exclusive supercars.

A Ferrari insider told CarAdvice that the new set-up is likely to be comparable to Qantas’s customer rewards hierarchy, where the airline offers an exclusive Chairman’s Lounge above the highest official tier (Platinum) of its Frequent Flyer program.

“Until now there has been no difference in terms of being a Ferrari owner, regardless of how many Ferraris you own or how long you have been a member,” our source said.

Ferrari has about 30 official national owners’ clubs worldwide, including Australia – where the clubs have certification from the supercar brand and permission to use official logos.
