Mercedes-Benz to launch new twin-turbo V6
Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its V6 petrol engine range with a new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre version.
A Mercedes insider has told CarAdvice the new boosted V6 will produce at least 250kW and more than 400Nm.
The figures mean the engine will surpass the 225kW/370Nm of the company’s current normally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 that CarAdvice believes will continue to exist, though the new engine will also be more fuel efficient.
CarAdvice’s source suggests the twin-turbo’s fuel consumption will be about the 7.0 litres per 100km mark, improving on the 3.5-litre V6’s best efficiency of 8.3L/100km (in the SLK350 and C350 C-Class Coupe).
The news potentially contradicts recent speculation by the UK’s Car magazine that Mercedes will swap its V6 engines for straight six-cylinders from 2015.
Our insider suggests it would be a strange move for Mercedes considering it has just invested in a new V6 family, with the direct injection 3.5-litre V6 launched only last year and the new twin-turbo 3.0-litre set to join it in about a year’s time.
The new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 is expected to slot into larger Mercedes models such as the E-Class sedan/wagon/coupe, CLS four-door ‘coupe’, S-Class limousine as well as the ML and GL SUVs.
The 3.5-litre V6 will continue in models such as the C-Class Coupe and SLK roadster.
