Hyundai Elantra Coupe confirmed for 2012 Chicago Auto Show in February

Hyundai will unveil a two-door coupe version of the Hyundai Elantra at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show in February.

From all reports, the new Elantra Coupe retains the sedan’s basic shape while dropping the rear doors and adding a much sportier vibe.

The Elantra Coupe is a similar concept to the Kia Cerato Koup: a sporty two-door version of a utilitarian four-door sedan.

Hyundai says it plans to differentiate the Elantra Coupe from the sedan by revising the gear ratios to give it a sportier driving character. At this stage, it is unclear whether the Coupe will get a more powerful engine or follow the lead of the Cerato Koup and retain the sedan’s basic powerplant.

Reports suggest the Hyundai Elantra Coupe could go on sale in the US as early as mid-2012, but Hyundai Australia says the Elantra Coupe will not be coming to Australia.

Note: Story updated November 15 with comment from Hyundai Australia.
