2012 Mitsubishi Mirage coming to Australia Q4 2012

The Mitsubishi Mirage is back. Mitsubishi has confirmed the Mirage will make a comeback after a 10-year hiatus, stepping up as the brand’s all-new global city car.

The Mitsubishi Mirage will make its world premiere at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show on November 30. It will go on sale initially in Thailand in March before spreading globally throughout 2012, including Australia.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia’s Lenore Fletcher confirmed the all-new Mirage would go on sale in Australia towards the fourth quarter of 2012.

Ms Fletcher said it was too early to confirm if the new light car would join the sub-$15,000 class in Australia, but insisted it would be “competitively priced and highly specified”.

The Mirage will replace the Colt in Mitsubishi’s line-up. The final stock of the ageing Colt is expected to be sold before the end of this year, meaning Mitsubishi will be without a light car in Australia for around nine months.

Ms Fletcher said it was likely the Mirage name would be applied internationally, and said Mitsubishi Australia was comfortable with that as the name had a good reputation and strong recognition in Australia.

At 3710mm long, 1665mm wide and 1490mm, the Mitsubishi Mirage is 175mm shorter, 15mm narrower and 60mm lower than the current-generation Colt – making it about the same size as a Toyota Yaris.

The front-wheel drive Mirage at Tokyo will be powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine. Teamed with stop/start technology (Auto Stop & Go) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), Mitsubishi is targeting combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.3 litres/100km under Japanese standards (that figure will rise under Australian standards).

Ms Fletcher confirmed Mitsubishi Australia was investigating this drivetrain as well as larger engines and different transmissions for our market.

Mitsubishi says it has designed the Mirage to meet the needs of both emerging and advanced markets, with an emphasis on ‘compactness, affordability and high fuel efficiency’.

The new Mirage promises ‘good manoeuvrability and easy driveability’, while also providing a comfortable cabin for five adults.
