Volkswagen Robust still testing in USA

July 15, 2008 by Alborz Fallah

Our Photographers caught Volkswagen’s upcoming pickup in America yesterday – following several conflicting reports about the car’s future. The most important being that VW won’t be selling the truck in Europe (or Australia).

The original plan was to build the car for Europe and other markets in Hannover, Germany, but according to VW, the increasing cost of petrol has meant the overall conditions for such a pick-up has “radically changed.

Having invested over 223 million euros ($366 million) in the VW plant in Pacheco, Argentina, the company plans to build at least 90,000 units annually for South American and Latin America markets.

Sources inside VW USA have said that dealers were unhappy with the materials and market segment the Robust would be in – as it’s ‘far below’ what regular VW buyers expect.

The name “Robust” has also been confirmed as nothing more than a working codename which may change before the truck reaches dealerships.

Whoever is your source at Car Advice is wrong.

Robust is Europe bound but through small amounts of imports (my source Automobilwoche)

As far as I know Robust will still come to Australia as long as the UK and South Africa will get it. (my source Automobilwoche & What Van ?)

Plus I know Aussie VWCV boss Phil Clark wants Robust Down Under :)

  5. That’s enough of that. I’m sure his name is Michael Hunt. And I’m equally sure that VW is late to the truck party, unless this thing is going into the US market engineered for a small-displacement turbo diesel, in which case it might make some sense.

aren’t we the third or fourth biggest ute nation (behind the US, Thailand and the UK(???))
gee car makers make some silly decisions!
i’d much rather see vw’s on the road instead of bloody hiluxes!

  7. VW_Freak says:

If VW want to topple Toyboata in 10-15 years time, then there’s no doubt that vehicle will end up here. They took their time bringing out a smaller SUV, the same will apply with utes.

  8. Huge says:
