Nissan LEAF taxi cabs to be trialed in New York

Nissan and the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission are getting ready to trial six Nissan LEAF fully electric vehicles (EV) for general taxi use. The cars will be used in the city to see how the technology copes within the infrastructure.

Applications to trial the LEAF are being taken now from eligible taxi drivers, with only six cars to be handed out. Each applicant will receive a Nissan LEAF ready for taxi duties free of charge on a one-year lease pilot program.

The aim of the trial is to gather information about how the electric vehicle shapes up in the frantic and busy lifestyle of New York, and to see how the LEAF's navigation programs work in and around New York City. The cars will be put under strenuous stop-start conditions which will place high demands on the LEAF's electric powertrain.

The Nissan LEAF features an electric motor driving the front wheels. Power comes from a 24kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing 80kW of power and 280Nm of torque. Full charge range has been rated between 76km and 169km, while the EPA has rated it at 117km. Nissan Australia will release the EV onto the local market during the first half of next year.

Interested applicants in New York are being urged to apply before November 30.

It's an interesting topic, electric taxis. Do you think the technology would work in Australia's capital cities? Feel free to give us your thoughts in the comments section below.
