2008 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series
July 11, 2008 by George Skentzos
The AMG tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with prestige performance, the Black Series label however is just downright scary.
The new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series is potent mix of lightweight design, insane performance and total exclusivity.
The high-performance two-seater coupe is powered by an AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, with a maximum output of 493kW at 5400rpm and an electronically limited 1000Nm between 2200 and 4200 rpm.
Without any electronic handicaps, the hand-built AMG engine would achieve maximum torque of 1200Nm thanks to the newly designed pair of turbochargers developed specifically for the SL 65 AMG Black Series engine.
These figures make the SL 65 AMG Black Series the most powerful AMG model ever to come out of Affalterbach.
From a standing start, it takes just 3.9 seconds to reach 100km/h and then onto an electronically limited top speed of 320km/h.
Its broad hips, retractable rear spoiler and aerodynamic front and rear aprons all find their origins in motorsport.
Pricing has not yet been announced; however it is most certainly a case of if you have to ask.

OMG… Best looking car ever
Sure is good looking, a genuine sports coupe!
Wonder how much $$$?
Looks good. Way better than the standard version.
This is motoring nirvana. The most beautiful car in the world, with the performance and exclusivity to match. I have a dream!

Not taking anything away from Merc-Benz or AMG its a great looking car but when you consider that Porsche have recently created a Limited Edition 911 GT-3 which is powered by a twin turbo 3.6 Litre Flat 6 cylinder producing 970 BHP and a top speed of 410Km/h….
it kind of makes the 670 BHP that AMG get from an engine that’s twice the size look kind of Average
Come on Ben Dover. Aston Martin still exists you know… I just wish they had squared the back off more aswell.
Great looking car.
Twin turbocharging a 6.0L V12 engine well, makes Mercedes look like they don’t have the engine technology to make that power without turbo or supercharging;a view I have held about Merc. for a long time.
The GT-R has a faster 0-100km/h but I admit it is a GREAT looking car.!
Looks like my 200sx with crazy wheel arches!
oh, & Wheelnut? If you don’t want the engine, I’ll have it! >:D
So what if it’s turbocharged. Turbos are a great way to get more power and save fuel so you can break the speed limit for longer without filling up (not that I recommend breaking the speed limit (and this is clearly designed for the track))
I knew it wouldn’t take long for someone to mention the GTR is faster to 100.
Try getting a car with over 1000nm of torque, and only 2WD off the line fast.
Looks good – Top Gear Super cool I suspect. Just says f-off look at me.
I wish I see one of these under my Christmas Tree this year! :D
But Duck weren’t you just hanging out for the Holden VE Sportwagon? you kept asking us when it was going to be released..
Fasthonda? what do you mean “Mercedes look like they don’t have the engine technology to make that power without turbo or supercharging;a view I have held about Merc. for a long time.”?
Who does have the technology to make that power and torque WITHOUT turbo’s or superchargers in a production car? No-one!
Given that you can count the number of cars on one hand that make 1000Nm its not hard to see that all the production cars with these outputs use either turbo or supercharging or both. And this car is driveable on road, not like a typical race car.
I say well done AMG, and when can we see one of these tackle the N’ring.
Yeah, but Wheelnut this is ALOT better! :D
^Yes it’s better then the Holden Sportswagon and yes I know that’s hard to believe! :)
Let’s just hope it drives more like the CLK63 Black than the SLK55 Black…
