Land Rover Defender to soldier on until 2017: report

LAND ROVER DEFENDER

Current Land Rover Defender production is set to continue until 2017, a recent Autocar report says, proving there could be more legs in the rough and rugged SUV yet.

One of the hurdles the current Land Rover Defender faces, like every new model vehicle that comes out, is whether or not it can pass ever-tightening emissions regulations. The next target for all manufacturers is the Euro 6 emissions laws, which are set to be in place in 2014.

In the Land Rover Defender’s case, its 2.2-litre diesel engine has already been designed to pass Euro 6 standards. This is said to contribute to the likelihood of Land Rover continuing production of the current model.

On top of this, the category into which the Defender falls could also allow Land Rover to continue production. A number of years ago the Defender was classified as a commercial vehicle instead of a passenger vehicle, this means it might not have to pass Euro 6 until 2015.

At the time of writing, the law states light commercial vehicles between 1305kg and 3500kg aren’t set to be Euro 6 compliant until September 2015, as opposed to passengers vehicles where the law will be in place in September 2014.

Another law-related hurdle Land Rover could jump allowing production to continue is the possibility of the Defender getting a pedestrian impact exemption for safety standards. However, a date for this is yet to be confirmed.

Despite all this, Land Rover is set to release the all-new Defender in 2015. Could this mean that both new and old models will sell side by side? We’ll keep you updated.

Great news for those in the market for a 4WD and actually take their 4wd’s off-road.

  • Doctor

    Hurtles??????

  • Charger

The greatest 4*4*byfar soldiers on! Grest stuff better than those soft roader concepts!

Not confirmed when it will die, be it soon, 2013/2015/2017 latter or whatever?

WON’T really die, as production will be moved to less strict country of India, for sub-continent consumption.

Will be with us for ever and ever, its a icon, but not as good as the JEEP!

Just move on aready LR!!! Talk about flogging a dead horse!!

    • Grr

Obviously the Defender fans cant let go either!!
Whilst 4×4′s must be great off road, they do spend most of their time onroad, so it must be up to todays standards in terms of safety and comfort.

Im a die hard 4x4er (none of this SUV soft roader crap) but i think its a good move by LR to move on, just wish they did it sooner!!

In a few years’ time, if you’re on the market for a proper live-axled, coil sprung, separate chassied, dual range 4×4, it looks as if your only option will be the 2nd hand market. That would be a sad day indeed.

2nd hand diesel 105 Series Landcruisers and TD42 Patrols are already asking the earth.

Thats true, nissan and toyota and just insanley expensive, even Jeep is headed down that track – i guess car companies are (unfortunately) just reflecting current demands, prices and trends.
And the list just grows for reasons why 4×4 brands are going soft –

Fuel is going up, meaning less travel and adventures.

More tracks and trails are being protected and closed due to nature conservatives.

People are working more meaning they have less to time to holiday and when they do they fly out to some crapy SE asian beach rather than drive a couple hours to visit our beautiful coastlines!!!

    Does it have front airbags?

  • Mooo

Hurtle? Have you Aussies not heard of hurdles?

  • Wd

This needs to stay!! Anyone who thinks LR should move on can buy one of the thousand soft roaders out there and leave these to the purists

    Best Defender review ever:

“This car is cool….very cool. Cool people step out of defenders; farmers, soldiers, firefighters, aid workers, explorers, royalty, mountain rescuers, special forces. It’s not a car for men who are so highly preened and plucked they look like women. It’s not a car for men who have a need to be looked at or feel the need to have a highly tuned ‘chick magnet’ with a ‘woofer’ box the size of a small country in the boot to prove they are a man. Metro sexual males will wince at the thought of climbing into a Defender in case they dirty their Armani jeans.
The man who drives a Defender is a down to earth, practical, modest all round bloody good egg that has a million cool stories about his life. He has no need for a ‘big fast red’ accessory to feel like he’s made it in the world. When Landcruiser drivers criticise Defenders, Defender drivers just smile wryly. If someone criticises a Toyota you can bet you will receive an hour long lecture on why Toyotas are so good. Good maybe….but definitely not cool. One could say almost like any type of whitegoods….useful, practical but definitely not cool.
So there you go, if you are considering buying a Defender you will be part of a unique group of individuals, how many times have you driven a Toyota and had other Toyota drivers give you a wave when passing? Drive a Defender and you automatically enter into a unique band of people.”
