2014 Audi R8 built around carbon fibre chassis

The next Audi R8 supercar will feature a new, lightweight and more rigid structure, incorporating carbon fibre and aluminium into its chassis construction. Thanks to the new chassis, up to 100kg will be shed from the current Audi R8's weight.

According to a recent Automobilwoche report in Germany, the 2014 Audi R8 will feature a hybrid carbon fibre rear sub-frame matched to an aluminium front section. The new design will allow the Audi R8 to be up to 30 per cent more structurally rigid, offering up to 40,000Nm per degree.

This amount of rigidity is very high. Audi design boss Michael Dick said in the report that the new model would provide a new benchmark in structural stiffness compared with rivals like the Ferrari 458, Porsche 911 and even the Lamborghini Aventador.

As for the propulsion for the next Audi R8, it's still a bit up in the air, but rumour has it the new model could be powered by Audi's new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. A variation of the new motor is featured in the new Audi S6 and Audi S8, and could potentially produce upwards of 400kW.

The 2014 Audi R8 is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2013. We'll keep you updated.
