Electric DeLorean to enter production in 2013

"The way I see it, if you’re gonna build an electric vehicle, why not do it with some style?"

They may not have been Doc Brown’s exact words, but the people at the DeLorean Motor Company in Texas are going to do just that.

A prototype of the Electric DeLorean has been previewed in the US, giving the world a taste of the all-electric DMC-12 it plans to put into production by 2013.

DMC has partnered with electric-car start-up Epic EV to develop the Electric DeLorean.

The prototype’s electric motor produces the equivalent of 194kW (although so far there’s no word if the engine requires one-point-twenty-one gigawatts of energy to run).

It will reportedly be capable of accelerating up to 125mph (200km/h), but we’re not entirely sure why anybody would bother taking this baby over 88mph.

Remarkably, it will have a range of close to 100 miles (160km) when driven efficiently, and around 110km when driven a little harder – putting it on par with many of today’s full-production EVs.

It looks like the space age DeLorean will finally get the futuristic powertrain it always deserved. What do you think? Is the Electric DeLorean the perfect EV? Let us know in the comments section below.
