Bentley SUV to be first-ever 12-cylinder SUV: Bentley CEO

According to Bentley boss Wolfgang Durheimer, the all-new upcoming Bentley SUV will be the world's first petrol-powered 12-cylinder SUV.

As far as official goes, the claim may be the case. However, a Mercedes-Benz G 65 AMG prototype has been spotted in Dubai recently, showcasing a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12. Mercedes-Benz is yet to release official data on the new variant though.

If Bentley is quick enough, this could leave the door open for the first-ever petrol 12-cylinder SUV to go to Bentley. In a recent Autocar report, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer said,

"Ninety-nine per cent of Bentley owners also own an SUV. I am absolutely sure the demand is there. We will be first to use a 12-cylinder petrol engine in a luxury SUV. I like this idea; it makes clear whose car is the boss."

Official specifications and details of the new model are yet to be released. Reports speculate the SUV will feature a revised version of the current W12 engine which is used in the Bentley Continental GT. A diesel V12 variant, based on the Audi TDI V12, is also said to join the lineup down the track.

Speaking about on-sale dates, Durheimer could only hint such a schedule, saying,

"The production date will be dictated by the cyclicity of models. The Mulsanne came in 2010, then the Continental no more than a year later. The lifespan of a model is usually six to eight years, so the new model will be valuable when we are expecting a lull. The downswing is the time to introduce this SUV."

This could mean an introduction in around 2015. We'll keep you updated on official word.
