2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 to get Porsche 911-style seven-speed manual: report

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will reportedly follow the lead of the new 2012 Porsche 911 and offer customers a seven-speed manual transmission option.

US publication Inside Line says a source with intimate knowledge of the C7 Corvette development program confirmed the seven-speed manual transmission would take over from the six-speed unit in the current C6 Corvette. Chevrolet is yet to officially confirm specific details of the new model.

A seven-speed manual would bring a number of benefits to the new Corvette. The obvious advantage is improved fuel consumption, with seventh acting as an overdrive gear for efficient highway cruising.

Extra ratios also give the engineers more scope to space the gears for improved low-speed performance.

A seven-speed transmission could also prove more efficient from a product streamlining perspective, as the transmission should be capable of running the same ratios with all models in the C7 Corvette line-up. The current C6 ZR1 runs a different six-speed manual gearset to the rest of the range.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette is expected to draw on a revised version of the current V8 engine architecture, with direct injection and a variable valve lift system on the cards for added performance and efficiency.

The new Corvette is expected to roll out in 2013.
