Toyota and Nissan stop production as Typhoon Roke hits Japan

Both Toyota Motor Corporation and Nissan Motor Company had to close many of their factories yesterday after as Typhoon Roke caused havoc in parts of central Japan. So far four people have died due to the typhoon.

After the earthquake devastation earlier this year, the last thing Japan needs right now is severe weather conditions, yet Mother Nature struck once again yesterday. Winds of up to 220km/h were recorded during Typhoon Roke, causing power to be cut from around 575,500 homes.

Toyota announced it had to close 11 of its factories in central Japan due to the storm, calling off various night shifts. Nissan also had to close two of its factories at around 2pm yesterday afternoon (local time).

Other car companies such as Mitsubishi Motors, Suzuki Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. were less affected by Typhoon Roke, however, Honda has said that it had to alter shift hours to ensure safety.

Mitsubishi and Suzuki have said their factories will operate as usual with no immediate plans to close them, according to Mitsubishi spokeswoman Namie Koketsu and Suzuki spokesman Ei Mochizuki.

A Toyota spokesman has declined to mention, specifically, what sort of production numbers are affected by the typhoon, but said Toyota will ramp up shift hours to make up the loss in production numbers in the immediate future.
