Top Gear Australia host audition tapes

June 20, 2008 by George Skentzos

The original UK series of Top Gear is only two more sleeps away from its series return, but we will have to wait considerably longer than that before our own uniquely Australian take on the popular show reaches local television screens.

In the mean time, SBS has created a short video piecing together the individual audition tapes of the three local Top Gear hosts. Does it have potential?

  1. The real Mr. Funk says:

Weak as Pix. This “Australian top gear” is dead in the water. It’s still born. It’s the worst idea since the American Red Dwarf.

  2. Captain Mainwaring says:

UK Top Gear was great while it lasted, but it’s now on the way out. Don’t know why they thought this was the time to milk it to death by franchising it around the world. A good way to completely destroy the brand I would say.

    New wheel of fortune?

Itis back in two days or so. I like the show and fifth gear as well because it gives me an idea of what is happening with cars in europe.
You do have a choice as well if you dont like it dont watch it or download it.

  5. Duck says:

    I don’t know………………..maybe TopGear Australia isn’t a good thing after all!

  6. crazychook says:

You ‘ve got to be kidding! In the words of a REAL Top Gear presenter,

    “What a bunch of plonkers!”

  7. MG says:

Saw this on the SBS site a while ago. I thought they weren’t that much better some of the ‘crap’ auditions posted on this site ages ago.

I also saw one of the hosts on the The Einstein Factor as one of the experts. He did not seem very charismatic nor very funny.

I really hope the Aussie Top Gear will not become an embarrassment to the whole country, but I’m not holding my breath.

Should have just gone with a few comedians IMO

  8. Martin says:

I really don’t know, something is telling me that this ‘Australian Top Gear’ isn’t going to be very good. But, won’t know until it airs.

  9. Martin says:

Also, my dad is spanish, and Murcielago actually means Bat.

  10. Austin says:

Sorry, there are no Jeremy Clarksons in those three I fear. Luckily the internet provides a way to quickly get the UK show. I’m sure we’ll out do the American Top Gear in every possible way though…we can go around corners for a start!!

  11. NIK516 says:

why cant they make a show about doing up old Australian cars?

id dearly love to watch that

  12. BIG JIM says:

SBS has already shown 2 episodes of the new top gear series. The locals dont compare with clarkson and crew but it still should be a good show

  13. Mike says:

BIG JIM, SBS is showing season 10 of Top Gear at present. Season 11 is about to start in the UK.

  14. Marketmaker says:

Charlie & Steve were quite good I thought. Warren looks/sounds a bit dull.

If they can get some good script writers (comedians)and good production/direction, and don’t get hampered too much by aust political correctness do-gooders – “The show glorifies speeding – disgusting”, then I think it can be a success.

I’d certainly give it few shows to get it right…

  15. Tom Reynolds says:

Love that one of them used their appearance on Dieter Kahsnitz’s C-Word show as their tape.

Dieter was not even short listed. That’s a shame.

  16. Dave says:

    Looks pretty bad.
    One talking about old ….boxes.
    One talking about motorcycles…

At least one guy had an opinion about something vaguely car related

  17. Daniel says:

While I’m a massive fan of the UK Top Gear, and can’t wait till it starts up again – I think you have to put it in perspective. How many years did people have to put up with the old format TG with Tiff & co before the reached the current popular format? I’d rater watch Aussie TG than Fifth Gear with Vicki Butler Squealalot and Jason “the ponce” Plato. I respect their driving skills, but the show’s not too great.

Give them a chance at least. They purposefully aren’t trying to emulate the 3 UK hosts as that would be a complete failure. Nobody can come near Clarkson anyway. He’s a classic – largely because he’s so opinionated and stubborn to begin with. You can’t just find some random off the street and try to script that into a brand new show in another political, regionial and cultural setting.

  18. No Name says:

Can’t belive I missed the first 45mins of series 11. Gutted, thank god for BBC iplayer i’m off to watch it tonight on the cooter.
Is SBS version available on line. I’d love to see you aussies doing their stuff with FPV’s, SS’s and (giggle) Aurions.
