2009 Ford Focus XR5 Turbo specs

By George Skentzos |

We have already spied the new XR5 Turbo on the streets of Melbourne, but now it’s official with Ford releasing the first details on its latest addition.

The first Focus to debut Ford’s new Kinetic design philosophy, the iconic German-built XR5 Turbo flagship looks simply stunning with an all-new appearance and raft of interior enhancements.

Powering the new XR5 Turbo is a 2.5-litre 166kW Duratec five-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, offering peak torque of 320Nm from 1,600rpm right through to 4,000rpm – plenty of potential for a bit of FPV special treatment.

“When coupled with the vehicle’s impressive dynamics attributes it is a combination which makes it one of the most enjoyable and engaging small Ford vehicles to drive,” said Ford Australia Vice President Marketing and Sales, Mark Winslow.

It looks as well as it goes too, with a completely new, more aggressive front bumper flanked by distinctive re-styled fog lamps and finished with a graphite mesh with signature honeycomb pattern.

At the rear, the XR5 Turbo gets a new bumper with an integrated lower diffuser framing two generously proportioned exhaust pipes, with full LED tail lamps and an oversized rear spoiler.

This sporting pedigree is continued to the interior, with alloy sports pedals, leather gear knob, a unique leather three-spoke steering wheel and carbon-effect highlights on the instrument panel, centre console and switch bezels.

“We believe we can cement this position with the introduction of a fresh new, feature laden, sports-performance Focus XR5 Turbo which offers unparalleled levels of functionality and versatility.”

Front passengers enjoy stylish Recaro-branded front seats which are standard on the Focus XR5 Turbo, the driver’s seat allows for fore and aft movement, plus recline, height, lumbar and cushion tilt adjustments, while the passenger seat adjusts manually fore-aft and can also recline.

The XR5 Turbo will come standard with enhanced in-car entertainment features and systems, including a premium centre console, Bluetooth with voice control, and a new ‘Ford Power’ start button.

Active safety features include standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control, Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

Among the passive safety systems are six airbags, pyrotechnic safety belt pre-tensioners and neck injury protection systems on the front seats.

In addition to the signature Electric Orange metallic hero colour, a palate of six other colours is available including new Frozen White, Panther Black, Moondust Silver, Sea Grey, Colorado Red and Performance Blue.

The recommended retail price of the new Focus XR5 Turbo is $36,990 with options including power tilt/slide sunroof ($1,900) and heated Recaro Sports Leather seats ($2,000).

Disturbingly, Electric Orange – the hero colour of the range – is a $1,800 option! Prestige paint also attracts a $310 premium and those GT stripes add another $350 to the bottom line.

  • Reckless1

Still looks cheap and nasty with those childish white stripes from a bygone era.

  • http://evo Frugal One

    What he said!

Dont see Benz and BMW doing such childish things!

    Cheers

    F-0

  • Stav

Simple dont get one with the stripes then!

  • http://navelcontemplation.blogspot.com/ SuperCujo

Don’t get one with stripes. Seems obvious but that bypasses some people.

I dunno why people would pay $1,800 for that orange, it will date quickly affecting resale (ask any owners of XR6Ts in Acid Rush)and it just plain looks better in the darker colours. Works better with the kinetic design language.

  • Andrew M

    Stav,
but your suggestion doesnt cater for those that want to simply whinge though ;)

  • AC COBRA

This looks ‘FANTASTIC”, STRIPES ARE COOL !!!!!!!!!!!! Retro is back and very popular, have you noticed RETRO STRIPED VEHICLES ON THE ROAD (MINI, FIAT 500)etc.

  • Marketmaker

So 2009 model adds what? New face & optional stripes? All other specs the same? Or am I missing something?

  • John

Would be nice if you could get the pics right. The fourth pic isn’t of the XR5′s (ST in Europe) interior. Seats aren’t the recaro and no centre binnacle gauges which are all standard on the current and also new XR5.

  • Lazybones

This is a little ripper, what an excellent package. If Reckless and FO think this looks bad stripes or not. Maybe you should check out the US version of the focus. Don’t forget your vomit bag!!!

Guys sometimes I wonder… bit of a slow news day?

Spied on the streets of Melbourne? When the car was announced months ago and some people have already started taking delivery? Dealers have had brochures for ages.

And now you piece together what look like brochure scans and incorrect photos of the interior that aren’t even an ST/XR5? that looks more like a Titanium interior. No Recaros, XR5′s don’t get Sat Nav… And we don’t even get the Titanium here unfortunately.

The paint has always been $1,800, certainly 2 years ago when I alsmot bought one. You act surprised, this is a fact that has been public knowledge for years… It’s a 3-pac pearlescent that goes through the paint shop twice, meaning a lot more time to paint and to behold the paint in the metal, it’s certainly a beautiful colour, plenty of guys in the Focus XR5 T owners club have them and they’re amazing. Not to everyone’s taste, hence why there are other normal colours!!

Next thing we’ll be seeing new fangled VT Commodore 2 door coupe “spyshots”. Rumour has it they’ll call it Monaro….

  • Bob

    Marketmaker,

New headlights, taillights, bumper and bonnet. In fact all panels including doors and boot have been given the Mondeo treatment and are new.

Interior is new with new stereo, start button, bluetooth voice integration option and sunroof option, new paint colours, new wheel design (subtle) and new rear bumper with splitter. Pretty subtle if you don’t have one to compare to next to it, but when you know what to look for, pretty nice changes that give it some style. Not that it needed much change as it was hardly ugly, but it has picked up changes from the European Focus range.

  • Bob

I just noticed that dash shot is a left hand drive car flipped to look like a right hand drive car… look at the speedo and tacho!!

  • http://isuzu XR2_Capri

    Lazybones,
have to argee that looks crap!
Why do the ford us designers think placing plastic chrome on the front of the intire fleet looks good?

  • Flying High

Its OK for the price I guess, however you might throw in a bit more and go the Golf GTi in this segment anyway….

  • Golfschwein

My 2 cents’ worth on the colour is this: Do you like it? BUY IT! You’re getting the car for yourself, not the next owner.

  • Joober

Golf, sometimes people take in the factor of resale, especially if they know they are going to keep it for a short time…

When I see those stripes… I dunno it reminds me of a dodge viper for some reason and Americana…

  • Watto_Cobra

Holy hell, Lazybones!!! I followed your link and thanks for the vomit-bag warning. What are the US thinking?

  • No Name

Bloody hell folks go look at the Ford UK website under ST and its there fully specced (UK admittedly).
I’m amazed someone hasn’t said “Its Eurocrap” “to expensive” and “why do the Euros think their cars are up market”.
I just drove a 2.0litre (petrol) Ghia Focus yesterday 700Km’s. Yep quite nice, good handling, bit noisy but how dull was it. Preferred the Astra Sports Hatch they week before by miles.
If anyone is considering the Focus, the Sony Radio is the best sound I’ve heard for a while. Well worth the money.

  • Golfschwein

I know, Joober. It’s a sad heart that doesn’t rejoice with colour.

You can buy a silver car for the next buyer. You can paint your interiotr walls a paler shade of beige for the next buyer too.

It’s just that I never have.

  • No Name

Yep those US ones are gross. A recent copy of Car & Driver Mag i have does a comparison test of medium size models including the Focus. They have managed to mess up both the interior and the exterior. The model they tested (not sure what grade) even had wind up windows in the front. COr how cool is that.

  • Glen

Still dunno why they dont offer cruise. But damn with fuel the way it is i may have to trade in the xr6 turbo for one. Or maybe wait for RS hopefully will come with awd but not holding my breath

  • Sexythang

the orange does look better. alot better

  • Mike

I am a Holden fan but I must admit FORD are doing great things. Watch out Holden, must get so new models flowing. I love the organge.

  • Lazybones

“Why do the ford us designers think placing plastic chrome on the front of the intire fleet looks good?”

Your not wrong, I can’t believe on the same website there is a video which talks about its design highlights. Its truly the ugly sister of the Euro Focus, why or why give it the same name!

  • Prince

XR5????? Don’t even wanna jump into it as I will feel ashame in one of this rubbish car.

  • Tony M

I wish it was 4X4 then maybe it could challenge the Lancer or Subaru.

  • Watto_Cobra

Thanks for the input Prince. Not slightly biased against Ford are we?

TonyM, it’s the forthcoming RS model that I wish was AWD.

  • Phillip

It looks great, but why don’t we get the 3-door in Australia?

  • Phillip

Oh and Prince, I think you should be more ashamed about your grammar than being seen in a certain type of car. First things first mate.

  • agro

i love the look of the xr5 & would buy one tomorrow if i didn’t love my old xy so much it would wipe the floor with most commodores on the road. sorry prince if you want to leave illiterate stupid comments on a site don’t leave them on a site where intelligent people want to post a blog all you have to do is go to a holden site & you will fit right in buddy

  • Duck

^Agro, please do not asume he is a holden lover because that is wrong, he may not be.

  • AC COBRA

^^Duck, I assume you are a Holden lover, but I could be wrong.

  • Duck

AC COBRA, I am but just because a person goes and makes a comment and say the XR5 is crap in his or her opinion does not mean they will be a holden lover like Prince for example.

I respect your likes, like you like ford and I hope you do respect for me that I like Holden. We cant change that. But when you go and talk about (like you sometimes) how much you hate Holden and the say Ford Rules and Holden sucks! Thats just rude and no respect of other peoples beleifs/likes. But if you like chinese cars well…………thats different because they are crap!

  • Watto_Cobra

True Duck, we’ve seen quite often that a negative opinion against Holden or Ford doesn’t mean they barrack for the other side. Often they’re Europhiles.

  • Duck

    ^Or Japanese lovers too!

  • Sparky

It looks good the stripes makes it looks more like a race car I better star saving money so I can buy this XR5T.
I hope the Fiesta XR4 would get a new look just like this XR5T.

  • ROSCO

READ A WRITE UP ON THIS CAR WHEN IT WAS FIRST RELEASED. IT WAS UP AGAINST THE XR6 AND A WRX.WASN’T THE MOST POWERFULL OF THE THREE, BUT BEST PACKAGE OVERALL.THE NEW MODEL LOOKS EVEN BETTER. FOR ANYONE TO SAY THIS CAR LOOKS CHEAP AND NASTY IS BEYOND BELIEF. BOTH HOLDEN AND FORD MAKE SOME GREAT LOOKING CARS.ITS JUST HARD FOR SOME PEOPLE TO ADMIT IT.

  • Seany

Anyone know this still doesn’t have left-foot rest like its predecessor?

  • Mel Neave

I have an 06 xr5 but its a little quiet. I want to put an exhaust on it! does any1 have any suggestions on how I can do this without loosing to much pressure and possibly increasing performance??

  • Peter Keultjes

We currently own a 2008 model XR5 turbo blue. I drive landcruisers 100 series at work and when i get home i love to get in the XR5 and have some fun.To ford well done what a car.I have owned a HSV Clubsport as well as 3 falcons with 351 V8′s standard and worked and the power in standard form form the XR5 is incredible. If i had spare money would get some gear from england for it.Had a young guy in a VESSV6 tried to drag me, did he get a shock 120kph in third at 6500rpm when i backed off and he was a good car length behind me.Bet he won’t be bragging to his mates about that.To anyone thinking of buying one do it absolutely awsome car to drive and comfortable. I’m 188cm or 6’2″ in height and have no problems. Will also if driven around city get around 9 – 9.8 litres per 100k’s.To Ford great car thanks.

  • malachi

I have just purchased one, and have not driven it yet… my feet are itching to stamp the go loud bits, but i’m wondering if anyone in australia who actually OWNS one can show me a descent site to purchase parts? BOV, timer, etc…
have any of the ppl on this thread even driven 1?

  • Qikturbo

    Malachi

Join the FordXR5Turbo site. You will have heaps of info. You may decide to have a re-flash done either with Bluefin or Dreamscience.
For example a stage one Bluefin re-flash(without any physical mods) will give you over 400nm and about 190kw.
The re-flash is very easy to do,basically “plug in and play.”

  • Conan

Never have I heard so Manu people whinge, if you don’t like it don’t buy it could it be any more simple???

  • Richard

I am the proud owner of a Black LV (08) Model XR5 and i love it to bits. It my first sports/performance car and i have done a few mods including: Intercool upgrade, CAI and dreamscience stratagem Ultra tune device with a 3″ Stainless TBE in the mail.Once the exhaust is installed i plan on changing the tune as im only running a basic one from the unit at the moment. Anyone still looking at buying one better be quik as what is in australia is all ford have. And if you want mods, do a search and buy direct from europe and save your money.

  • Deby

Just bought a 2010 Model XR5 Turbo … snazzy car … didn’t opt for the stripes … took it for a drive and it drives great … I am trading in my Ford Falcon Ute XR6 Turbo .. But very happy with my buy :)

  • MattP

Picking up my silver XR5 on Monday, my research is struggling to find any faults or issues with this car. On test drive the Volvo T5 engine was sweet, great sound and torque. Slick gearbox. I got one of the last in stock. My first Ford but looks like a keeper.
