Maserati has revealed the Maserati Kubang concept all-new SUV at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. This is the first time the new SUV has been seen in public.

Maserati hasn’t revealed all that many details about the new concept, only saying that it is one which offers “uplifting driving pleasure and luxury atmosphere” and one that is in tune with the company’s main characteristics. Maserati said,

“Style, engine, suspensions, brakes, handling and performance will all be 100 per cent Maserati in picture-perfect continuity with the brand’s core values of sportiness, style, elegance, luxury, performance and craftsmanship”.

The Maserati Kubang concept is based on the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee platform which provides the sturdy off-road foundations. Power for the eventual production version is expected to come from a 4.7-litre Ferrari-derived V8 producing around 330kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

Maserati has revealed that the new Kubang SUV will use an new eight-speed automatic transmission. The company has also said the SUV would come with performance oriented components, such as the brakes, suspension and steering, which would be developed at Maserati’s development centre in Modena, Italy.

No word has been mentioned on when the Maserati Kubang will hit the market in some kind of production form. We’ll certainly keep you updated. In the meantime, what do you think of the new design? Does it ring true to Maserati? Would you buy one?

I like it… Looks much better than the render that was floating around a few days ago.

    • niceCAR

Looking at that last photo, looks like Hyundai/kia designed the back of it.

  • Monk

    Awful name… Ker-Bang!

    • Monk

Who will it be bought by?
      Ban-Kers

  • Happy Dude

Only be afforded by rich wan-kers

  • Shak

Who cares who can afford it! It looks good, and judging by how much power the SRT8 Jeep GC is packing, this thing should easily be able to handle more.

  • Grady

Whoa this looks a world apart from the concept we saw recently. I love it. The maserati signature design cues have translated well to the SUV.

  • by_mng

very nice looking concept, cleaner lines makes it look much better than the pocket guide maserati concept we saw few days earlier

hope the production version stay true to this

  • omofuju

Finally – someone who got luxury SUV design right. How long does it take..?

  • John Citizen

When will there be pics of it in the flesh? Too many totally different renderings floating around

  • Jack

From the front it isn’t dissimilar to the new Mazda CX-5

Great for Mazda, not so much for Maserati

  • Skeeter

Proper door handles, large mirrors, decent amount of tire sidewall, apart from the headlights it looks production ready

Who needs it? Fiat Chrysler already make one of the best genuine SUVs at Jeep. People who want an elephant with a badge can buy an Audi Q7 or a Mercedes GL. People who want a fine high speed autobahn cruiser can buy a ……….. Maserati Quattroporte!

    • Ample Parking

Because Fiat would understandably prefer people to buy their badged elephants from them, rather than from Audi or Mercedes!

  • Alexander

I personally like it, with the decent Jeep/Merc developed platform, Ferarri V8 and 8 speed ZF auto it should drive well. It also looks much better than last weeks horrible rendering!

  • Daniel

That’s better! It’s very close to what we saw the other day but so much better somehow. If I was in the market for an SUV like this, I would definitely consider one.

  • hehe

Is it me or does it really look more german than italian?

  • Dave

No looks like an ugly porsche cayenne, and will be built along side the Jeep Cherokee, so why not buy the jeep and keep the extra couple of hundred thousand… Cause you wanna be different, so it will just be an alternate to the cayenne but more expensive and uglier

I like the look of it, but I’m not so sure about the name…

  • Greasy

The name just sounds wrong-altho it translates indirectly into “mud play” in Indonesian.

    • K20A

Correct. It means mud hole or puddle.

Anyone knows why Maserati chose the name? usually there’s always a story behind a name..

  • North Valley

I agree about Fiat Chrysler, (from 2012 on), making a great update and development of THE original, and still the best, “SUV”.

Obviously this Maserati is aimed at a completely different market.

It does look sort of German to me also not Italian. But IF I had the money, and I could still keep my original “SUV”, well then … Heck Yeah I’d buy one!

But that unfortunately onomatopoeiaic name really has to go.
