Audi R8 e-tron Concept second-gen to be unveiled at Frankfurt show

Audi has announced it will unveil a new version of the Audi R8 e-tron Concept at tomorrow's 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. The concept was first unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

This new Audi R8 e-tron is the second-generation version and is said to showcase specifications and cosmetic highlights closer to the eventual production version.

From the outside, the e-tron is similar to the petrol-powered production Audi R8 models currently on the market. It has 'normal' alloy wheels, as opposed to the futuristic chrome items featured on the first e-tron concept, as well as more conventional front grille and fascia design.

Audi is looking to introduce a production version of the Audi R8 e-tron Concept onto the market sometime next year. Like the concept, it will feature a fully electric powertrain comprising four separate electric motors mounted at each wheel.

Combined, the motors will produce around 230kW of power and 4495Nm of torque (at the wheels, after reduction ratio of the drivetrain), although definite production specifications are yet to be finalised.

The Audi e-tron will be capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds and have an expected full-charge range of around 250km. Recharging will take six to eight hours using a normal household power socket, or 2.5 hours with a rapid-charge system.

Full details will be revealed later tomorrow night when the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show kicks off. Stay tuned for more details on this, and full coverage on the show over the next couple of days.
