2012 Subaru BRZ spy shots

Subaru has been spotted testing the upcoming new rear-wheel drive Subaru BRZ (boxer, rear-drive, Zenith) out in public. A concept version of the new coupe, which is being developed alongside the Toyota FT-86/FRS, will be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

Details of the Subaru BRZ are scarce, with the only concrete facts saying that it will feature a naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine, sending power to the rear wheels. This will be Subaru's first-ever rear-wheel drive mainstream car.

Rumour has it Subaru is planning on debuting a new direct-injection system in the Subaru BRZ, which could present respectable performance and fuel economy figures. The engine will likely be matched up to a six-speed manual transmission.

As for the looks of the new model, these spy shots don't reveal all that much, especially with the disorienting paintwork, but the overall body size and shape can be interpreted.

According to the Subaru global website, the Subaru BRZ will go on sale in Spring 2012 - Autumn 2012 for Australia.

We'll keep you up to date with full coverage of the Subaru BRZ unveiling at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
