Our Rating:

The Lexus IS 350 is without doubt one of the most complete packages for a car in its class.

The current-generation Lexus IS range has been around since 2005, however Australian buyers had to do without the IS 350 until late last year.

The Lexus IS 350 sits between the IS 250 and the range-topping performance-oriented IS-F. The best thing about this middle child is that it’s much closer in performance to the IS-F than the IS 250.

Lexus has taken the familiar 3.5-litre V6 engine found across the Toyota range and managed to fine-tune its performance figures to 233kW of power and 378Nm of torque. That results in a very quick 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.6 seconds.

Best of all, prices for the Lexus IS 350 start from just $64,800 and if you were to compare that to German offerings with similar performance, you’d be adding at least another $10,000 to the price tag.

So what’s the catch? Well, not much. The one you’d go for is the Lexus IS 350 F Sport (tested here), which has a list price of $71,800, but even that is still significantly cheaper than the BMW 335i ($108,200) and Mercedes-Benz C 350 diesel ($94,400). Unlike its German rivals, it’s pretty much option-less, as in, it comes with everything standard bar a moonroof.

Despite my utmost admiration and love for the IS F, I haven’t been the biggest fan of the IS 250. Although more than good enough for the majority, it’s never been my cup of tea. So when it came to picking up the Lexus IS 350, I wasn’t really expecting much.

It was with that mindset that I drove out of Lexus’s Brisbane dealership in Indooroopilly without much enthusiasm. A quick left and a right turn led me to a free stretch of road so that I could feed the V6 a bit of juice. It’s often the case that if you get in to a new car with a preconceived notion, that tends to carry through. In the case of the Lexus IS 350 though, it only took five minutes for me to change my mind and I was happier than a pig in… well, mud.

There is something very special and unique about certain cars, some people call it soul, others call it character. The Japanese have been unduly criticised for lacking both. Fortunately for the Lexus IS 350, it oozes it without even trying.

Power delivery from the 3.5-litre V6 is instant, extreme and without hesitation. The second you touch that accelerator pedal the engine roars to life, pushing you back into the seat. Although a very different tune to the IS F, the mechanical nature of the exhaust note is very much Japanese at heart – it’s as if someone is orchestrating the soundtrack being emitted in real time.

As with the IS F, the IS 350’s rear end is wild and always wanting to play. Lexus’s traction control does a good job of keeping it in line, but turn it off and you’ll quickly realise just how balanced the IS chassis really is.

The reason I’d highly recommend the IS 350 F Sport is due to the variant’s unique suspension package, which includes changes to the front and rear suspension (coil springs shortened by 10mm), wheel/tyre package (18-inch diameter alloy wheels and 40-aspect ratio tyres) and electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering (steering-gear ratio of 13:6:1, compared with 13:5:1 for the other IS 250/350 model grades).

All of that means sportier handling, better cornering ability and much more fun for those of us who enjoy going around corners for the sake of it. To be fair, the steering feel is similar to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan but not as heavy as the BMW 335i. Where the BMWs give you ample feedback and tighten around bends, Lexus and Mercedes have gone for a slightly more comfortable (lighter) steering feel.

If you’re coming from a BMW, you’ll instantly notice the different steering feel and may require some time to adjust, but otherwise it’s a non-issue.

The six-speed gearbox is a generation behind the seven-speed found in the new C-Class but on par with the six-speed in the BMWs. Either way, it does an excellent job of extracting all the power and torque from the V6. Equipped with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the IS 350 can go from being a docile daily commuter to a proper sports cars almost instantly. While the IS F is always a sports car and feels like one at all times, the IS 350 F Sport is a true middle ground for those who want a sports car, but not 24/7.

The 5.6 second 0-100km/h time should give you an idea of just how quick this is (in comparison, the $129,000 IS F does it in 4.8 seconds). Its more expensive direct rival is surprisingly slower, with the BMW 335i doing the same dash in 5.8 seconds.

The F Sport is equipped with comfortable F-style bucket seats that hold you in around corners but also provide genuinely good back support for those long journeys.

The rear seats are as expected for a Lexus: comfortable and plush. You wouldn’t want to have more than two adults in the back seat for prolonged periods of time though.

If you heed my advice and go for the F Sport, you’ll also get IS F-style steering wheel, scuff plates, gear knob and sports pedals. If you ever happen to look up, you’ll also notice the black roof lining.

Something I would have liked to see improved further on the IS 350 was the centre instrument cluster. Although Lexus has done a minor rework of the interior, there is still a sense that this car was designed back in 2005. In comparison with its direct German rivals, the IS falls short in this regard.

From the outside, the 2011 Lexus IS 350′s look is enhanced with assertively designed upper and lower grilles (wider), recessed fog lamps as well as restyled headlamps. LED daytime running lamps also help modernise the revamped model. The rear end is updated with larger exhaust tips and darker taillights.

Overall, the facelifted design leaves a more masculine look than before, which is particularly pronounced in the IS 350 F Sport as it gains unique shadow chrome alloy wheels.

During the course of week, our Lexus IS 350 test car was put through its paces in peak hour traffic, around the twisty roads of Mount Glorious and driven on some poorly surfaced roads. It managed all tasks with ease, never complaining in the process. It’s an all around perfect daily sedan with heaps of potential for enthusiastic driving when the time comes.

Much like all Lexus models, the IS 350 comes with the best in safety technology. In the IS 350’s case, that means eight SRS airbags and Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM). If you decide to go for the Sport Luxury variant, you’ll also get Active Cruise Control (which will follow the car in front at the same speed) and Pre-Collision Safety System (Pre-Collision Brake).

As much as it pains me to say it, the Lexus IS 350 almost negates the need for an IS F. Sure, the IS F is fantastic in all regards (and the V8′s soundtrack is second to none), but unless you plan on tracking your IS F (or you want to out-do your neighbour’s BMW M3), the IS 350 is as fast and sporty as you’ll ever need for day to day driving.

You can indeed test drive it against the Germans, but remember the price difference is substantial. The current Lexus IS range has been around for some time, but given the recent facelift, it’s more than likely to remain the same shape for at least a few more years. If you’ve ever wanted a proper and practical luxury sports sedan for well and truly under 100k, the Lexus IS 350 is the ideal choice.

Lexus IS 350 Review

I really don’t know why you would buy a 335i when A Volvo S60 T6 and a Sports Luxury is350 (grade higher than this one) and they are both 20k less!!! You could buy a Kia Rio with you spare change :D

    • RoFlmaTiC

Plus the 3L turbo engine in the 335i is still reported as having issues with the fuel pump (BMW have tried for years to fix the issue but can’t!) There’s a big class action in USA regarding this problem.

      • F1MotoGP

More than 2 years old news! BMW is aware of the problem and has extended the warranty on the part.

You did not say about Lexus oil sludge problem or many others.

        Source: consumeraffairs.com

        • RoFlmaTiC

This was BMW’s “fix” to the problem:

          http://www . e90post . com/forums/showthread.php?t=433273

Overhauled the entire N54 engine and replaced it with the N55. Unfortunately bad the fuel pump still dies…

    • David

Would love to see a comparison on CA between the Lexus, Volvo S60 AWD and perhaps the Passat CC AWD – 3 of the better luxury sporty tourers in the price range.

  • smokin’R32

Always liked the Lexus IS, they seem to age well and from what I hear have rock solid reliability. This ones a winner

    • Joker

Noticed that too..Lexus are being dragged kicking and screaming out of the 80′s hmm?
      My Folks 1989 Mazda 929 had a similar clock…

    • Sonu

Yeah mate, this seems to be the trend for most lexus cars. Its even in the ls460. Its like my Casio calculator from the 1980′s. Lexus make great cars but just dont give the premium confidence you get from a bmw, audi or merc.

      • Brenn

LS460 interior.. The digital clock seems to be integrated beautifully..

        upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/Lexus_LS600hL_01.JPG

        • Lucii Pooky

Brenn, what is up with you and that photo?! are you a Lexus salesman!? Every post you have includes that link -.-

        • Devil’s Advocate

Sure it may be to use your words, “integrated beautifully”, however the display itself wouldn’t look out of place in the 80s. In fact looks exactly the same as the “standard Toyota digital clock display” from that decade. Not something you would expect in a 6 figure, top of the range car…

      • Lindsay

        “Premium confidence”?

It’s a clock. It tells the time. The Japanese clearly aren’t for messing around with something that has one job.

        • Joker

Or they’re clearly being cheap. Digital Clocks are gone in almost if not ALL makes around the globe. Digital Odometer too. It looks tacky.. even if functional.

      • Dan

You know, if the only thing that you can criticise in this car is a clock, than that is just friggin awesome! Because everything else on this car is clearly awesome, as there is no other criticism. And a crappy clock is such an insignificant item on a car, that in a way, makes this car 100% perfect!

    • Devil’s Advocate

The clock looks like the same display Toyota have used since at least the early/mid 80s!!

      • Old Dog

It is the same display. Since the earthquake they’ve had to resort to ebay to find clocks for their cars.

BTW, did you notice the clock in the land rover defender, perhaps the most utilitarian vehicle on the plant? Nice analogue number out of the rangie.

    • Theo

haha was just thinking the same…what a disgrace

      • NotTheStig

And Toyota love having displays that don’t even match in colour, style, size or type. Looks cheap and nasty. Have a look at a Volvo/Audi etc – everything the same font, even the LED displays…

    • Rim

      Here LEXUS analogue clock!

      Happy??

    • Golfschwein

Hehe, I was just about to write something similar. It looks like the readout from my basic Casio calculator’s display from precisely….1979.

  • F1MotoGP

Nice car. Lexus problem is fuel economy.

    • Jd

But don’t forget, unlike the Europeans cars, this Lexus has a natural, smooth aspirated power delivery.. You feel the power throughout the rev line.. And not to mention sounds much better then the rattles the European cars produce..

      • F1MotoGP

Than you should check power and Nm graph for Lexus and Audi,BMW,Mercedes.
        Lexus GS 300 Aut -98 (163 kW)at 3300 rpm 235Nm at 3800 265Nm. That is a sharp rise.

        BMW 530i Aut -03 (170 kW) 2100 rpm 238Nm at 3500 257 Nm
        That is very even rise.

        Source: Rototest Research Institute

        • F1MotoGP

Just find on Japanese Lexus website. Lexus IS350 Nm graph.
Nm goes up till 2000 than flat till 3000.Goes down till 3500 and peaks at 4800.

          Source: Lexus Japan

      • Phil

If you look up the “Wards best engines” and the “International Engine of the Year”, you would find this sized 6 cylinder engine category was dominated by the Europeans (well by that I just mean BMW) whether Turbo or not and the judges found no rattles nor have any reviews on BMW I6 engines found rattles.

        • Devil’s Advocate

I agree Phil. Plus IMHO and personal experience, the BMW straight 6 is one of the smoothest 6 cyl engines out there with a very flat torque curve. Plus they make a better noise than any V6, especially when you are in the upper registers! Just youtube the E46 M3 CSL and turn the volume up. If that doesn’t make the hairs on the back of you neck stand up, then you are not a true motoring enthusiast!

          • qikturbo

I agree but as soon as they turbocharge the engine,it completely loses that special noise.

          • Devil’s Advocate

I was thinking the same qikturbo, however after seeing vids/youtube of the 1 series M, it hasn’t lost that metallic snarl at all. Thank god…..

        • Mr Squiggle

Like so many awards with the exception of Consumer Reports and JD Power, Wards best engines dont look at longevity. They also won’t pay your service or repair costs when the engine fails. Wards gave a gong to Peuegot/Mini 1.6 turbo engines. Talk to owners. Broken timing chains at under 40,000 km are common. It goes downhill from there.
Look at Wheels Car of the year winners over the last 3 decades. What seemed good when new turned out to be some great lemons. They picked Passat the year before VW left the country. They pikced Leyland P76. A real stinker. They picked the Holden Camira. Mistubishi Nimbus !?! Seriously.
          Wards shmords.!

  • Dan

Love this car!! I had a test drive a few months ago, I was really impressed!

Pity Lexus started selling it this late. Should have been sold here back in 2005! They made the same mistake with the IS300, waited for a few years selling the slow IS200, before they released the IS300. Better late than never I guess!

  • Kb

Funny, one of the reason I like this car over the BMW is the interior of the Lexus IS is very nice.. Although that colour doesn’t do it any justice..

    • Dan

Agreed. I don’t think the interior has aged much at all (ignoring the obvious clock of course!). I think for a car first made in 2005 both the exterior and interior are still very modern.

  • Vibe

    Lexus Indooroopilly! Has beautiful gardens.

  • http://aca Shane

I carn’t believe people are worried about a clock. Fairdinkum, get over it – it’s just a clock … crikey !!

    • K20A

Not worried about the clock.. the clock itself isn’t a problem in isolation.. but when put on the dash of a universally acknowledged premium / luxury auotomobiles.. it’s definitely out of place.

When all the dash is all glimmering with blue neon ‘Optitron’ display, this recessed hole with green vacuum fluorescent display screams out ‘I’m from Corolla!’.

To be fair though on the latest RX they have at least match the colour of the display with the rest of the dash (purplish blue). Still, a more elegant solution would be to integrate it with the main screen (gps) or HVAC display (like they did on the CT200h). So yeah, they finally nailed it on the CT I guess. Well done Lexus!

      • http://ACA Shane

K20A – It is a clock … that’s it, nothing more – just a clock. When i sit in a car (any car no matter what it is) the last thing i worry about is what the clock looks like.

Regardless wether it screams Corolla or not, fact remains … Lexus ‘arguably’ engineers the highest quality cars that can be found anywhere in the world today and there an entire car that i much prefer to focus
on then what the clock looks like.

But anyway, each for thier own i guess

pffft … i carn’t believe we are talking about a clock.

    • Golfschwein

Not worried by it. Amused, more like it. Yes, I found it amusing.

  • Zzzzzzz

Really I test drove it but found it nothing like this review. The power isn’t instant like other NA engine even when I flick the auto to manual and shift with the paddle shift. Friend and I had the same feel. Only good thing is the Mark Levinson DVD system…

  • Aa

    ‘The Relentless Persuit of Perfection’

  • Shak

I’ve got to say everything said in the review has also been my experience with my IS350. I tried the BMW and Volvo before i bought the Lexus, but not the MB. One thing i would say though is that while the Lexus interior is showing its age, it is much better quality and feel than the all black plastic affair in the BMW.

    • Phil

You know, BMW does offer the interior plastics in colours other than black along with several piano, chrome and wood trimmings.

      • Shak

Yes, i dont mean all the soft touch points. I mean more the bits that surround the console and little things like that. While my Lexus isnt too flash in these areas either, it just feels and looks better than what BMW have on offer…Just my opinion.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1715760895 Charles Dean

I see many females who drive the IS250C

  • Jimmy James

The interior is comically low rent for a car in this price range.

  • Sumpguard

I watched one of these take off from the traffic lights the other night and it went very well. I reckon the IS is the best looking in the entire lexus range personally.

    • Vincent

thats not saying much, lexus cars don’t exactly ooze sexiness

  • AR

The current Lexus IS has been out since 2005. Expect an obsolete product and huge depreciation the moment you bought it. The new IS model is just round the corner.

    • Phil

2005 is only 6 years ago. Mercedes has previous had models out for over 10 years with all enjoying solid residules.

  • Michael

Shame these came out so late. Means I have to wait longer to buy one used.

  • john

could you please provide economy figures? in addition could you give an idea of scheduled service costs upto 60 000km with your road tests?

    • The other Brad

According to Redbook fuel eco details are:
      Urban: 13 L/100km
      Extra Urban: 7.2 L/100km
      Combined: 9.4 L/100km.

    • F1MotoGP

I do not know IS350 service costs but IS 250 at Blackburn Lexus is:

      30T km $645, 45T km $585

      • john

        Thanks

    • Graeme

I get urban 12.6L/100, but I am very heavy footed and have the engine in sports mode permanently. I have yet to see anyone pull ahead of me at lights, which is an indication of the way I drive as opposed to if other perforance cars could go faster.
I did try (with limited success ) to drive conservatively for a tank of fuel and got it down to 11.6L
Haven’t had a service yet on the IS350, but my older RX350 costs around $500-600 once per year ($around $850 for the big services). It is a lot cheaper than my old Subaru Liberty or my wifes old Mazda

  • JP

I think the styling of this car has aged poorly, & it was bland to start with. The dark coloured wheels really drag down the appearance IMO.

Interesting that after 20 years in Oz, & still Lexus is outsold nearly 3 to 1 by each of the Germans (Merc, BMW, Audi).
If the IS350 is so wonderful, it’s amazing that they’re so comprehensively outside, on a continual basis.

It must be that buyers at this level still just see them as toyotas.

I have yet to see any Lexus that’s beautifully styled, & that 200h hatch is just plain ugly. It makes the Prius donor car look classy.

    • http://ACA Shane

JP – Lexus has a very small range of cars in Australia compared to the German trio.

With exception to this year because of the effects of the Japanese earthquake, Lexus has been the no.1 selling marque in North America for the past 10 years and offer considerably more products (cars) to sell then they do in most other markets of the world.

I see Audi as nothing more then a VW or a Merc nothing more then a Sudanese taxi. But haa … that’s only my opinion !!

      • Powah

Don’t forget Lexus had become the top selling foreign luxury car in the USA since 1991 or 1992..!! That was just 2yrs after it was launched it outsold Mercedes, BMW etc etc! I’m sure the Germans had a hard time sleeping at night back then..

By 2000 Lexus had become the #1 luxury car in the USA

    • Cct

German cars everywhere, go to poor third world countries and you see so many Volkswagen, Mercedes, Audi etc..

But you don’t see Lexus neither do you see Toyota in poor third world countries..

      That explains it quite well..

      • Phil

I guess Lexus and Toyota don’t stand up to the longevity favoured by Africans who hang onto Mercs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Likewise Central and South Americans who love the reliability of old VWs.

      • http://NSSAN James Cortez

What a whole bunch of hogwash buddy! I worked in poor third world countries like Algeria, Nigeria, Chad. VW yes but Audi, Merc, BMW? I hardly ever see them. So check your fact before posting a comment as readers are misled with wrong info!!

        • Phil

Your a bunch of hogwash, have a look at what brand of clapped out old bus/truck is being used in those countrys. Chances are it’s a Mercedes Unimog. In production since the 1940s, you’ll find them spread throughout most 3rd world countrys. Same goes for the Mercedes W123 series E class, still used as taxis in many Africans countrys (among others).
You’ll also find that there seems to be a tradition with the leaders in Africa nations, all of them seem to travel around in old Mercedes W116 series S class.
Funnily enough, you’ll also find Mercedes has factories in Africa and manufactuers cars/trucks there.

Plenty of Mercs in Malaysia and Indonesia too. If your one of the ~8% of the very wealthy (which accounts for about 40 million people there), a Mercedes-Benz is standard issue.

          • http://nissan James Cortez

Phil, your airhead and emotional response is a typical blue collar, no college degree person. enough of that.

Go to California and see which luxury brand the public buy!! typical country bumpkin who never gets out of his own country

  • JP

    Comprehensively “out-sold”…..

  • Daniel

What is this? 1995? What is with the styling? If they made it a looker it would sell like hot cakes.

    • Dan

      How’s it trollin’ dude?

      • Daniel

A diff opinion to yours is trolling? Idiot.

    • Goodg

It looks quite good.. The IS-F looks very awesome though.. Surprised that I see IS-F’s on the road more often then I think..

  • Rim

This car is superior to C-class, 3 series and the fugly A4..

    • F1MotoGP

I would not say superior because..

      Lexus 233kW at 6400rpm,
      BMW 335i 225kW at 5800rpm

      Lexus 378Nm at 4800rpm,
      BMW 335i 400Nm at between 1200-5000rpm

      • Fizza

The BMW 335i is undoubtedly superior. However when you take into consideration the almost $40,000 difference in price between the two cars, the relative gains the BMW may have over the IS350 is simply not enough to justify the price premium.

        • F1MotoGP

I am not talking about price just engine. You are right when you want to spend no more than $80T go for Lexus but if you can spend up to $120T than BMW. It is always a hard choice. I could not decide in 5 min!!

        • H2

Sorry but what is your definition of superior?? For me it’s quality and

          -Build quality
          -Panel gap tightness
          -Engine refinement
          -Durubality
          -Overall part quality
          -Paint quality
          -Power
          -Reliability

Lexus does those all better then anyone..

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1715760895 Charles Dean

            Spot on

      • Phil

335i also has better fuel economy (8.7L\100km – which strangely is more than the 535i which is 8.4L\100km?).
335i is avaliable in a wagon and coupe and as a manual.

I don’t know why its $50,000 more expensive than a 320i though – surely it costs BMW much more to produce and sell two 320s than it would for just one 335i. A case of BMW charging extra just because they can.

Well the IS350 is more powerful then the 335i.. Also the fuel figures for the Lexus are impressive, considering how the BMW has twin turbo’s etc.. And how the IS350 is more powerful then 335i

        • F1MotoGP

What you mean more powerful? I just checked BMW and Lexus website. BMW is 225kW Lexus 233kW. It is only 8kW and BMW does it at 5800 Lexus at 6400. Could be that extra 8kW comes from higher revs. You forgot to say that BMW got 400Nm between 1200-5000rpm but Lexus 378Nm at 4800rpm.
If I look at the engine I go for BMW but when I look at the price I take the Lexus.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1715760895 Charles Dean

When you say BMW has 400Nm between 1200-5000..where exactly because there is a big difference between 1200rpm-5000rpm..

Also after 5000rpm the Lexus will reach the finish line where as the BMW would be out of breath..

Also the BMW makes use of twin turbo, so like any other car with a non natural aspirated engine there is a power lag..

          • F1MotoGP

            to Charles Dean

“When you say BMW has 400Nm between 1200-5000..where exactly because there is a big difference between 1200rpm-5000rpm.”

Sorry my mistake; from 1200 to 5000 is 400Nm!

      • http://NSSAN James Cortez

Agree with you but with the price BMW charges Australian buyers, IS350 is a much better value, period. Unless of course you are a holywood celebrity or top NFL player.

      • Nuo

IS350 sounds better and is more powerful then 335i

        • F1MotoGP

8Kw more and it is over 6000rpm and you be traveling more than 200km/h and you over the legal speed limit!

  • Logm

Mainly i like Lexus over Euro cars is because Lexus have such smooth and powerful engines.. BMW, Audi and Mercedes engine all have that cheap rattling noise..

    • F1MotoGP

With comment like this we all wonder what you know about cars!

      • Phil

Maybe he can’t identify that the BMW/Audi/Merc he heard was a Diesel?

  • Nice

I wouldn’t mind driving that Lexus..

  • Fizza

Considering that this car was released in 2005 and will invariably be upgraded in the near future, I was hoping that the 2012 Toyota Aurion would benefit from the direct injection technology used in this car. 233kw is a worthwhile upgrade over the current Aurion’s 200kw which in its next generation will span until at least 2016. The Di engine would also enable the Aurion to remain competitive against the likes of Holden who have already implemented the SIDI technology into their current generation of cars. The idea of a 2006 Aurion and a 2016 Aurion having virtually the same engine and power specs doesn’t sit well in what is undoubtedly a very fast moving industry.

    • Phil

Toyota has to heavily discount Aurion to shift them, adding DI will add to their production costs. They already annouced minor tweaks to Aurion engine + weight reduction which provides marginal performance/economy gains.
Besides, the typical Aurion buyer is not going to notice.

My uncle is going to buy Lexus LS460

    • Shak

One day…I took one for a drive the day i purchased my car and i have to say these things are Brilliant cars. In every conceivable way.

      • Coolcar

Yeah they really are the true meaning of luxury and serenity..

  • PeterG

Here in Oz quality Japanese imports are much better value than the Euros.
In the UK the reverse is true.
So here I would go the Lexus over the 335i and take a couple of overseas trips with the change.

  • GC

I had a IS250 before i bought the BMW 335i M-SPORT coupe not regarding the poor performance of the IS250 but the rest of the car the IS350-250 had sport suspension and the BMW kills the lexus sport suspension and the steering is A1 plus in the bmw,you are connected with the road it is a joy to drive compared to the lexus,as for the coupe it has more room in the back and no problems with reversing my head hits the roof of the lexus, the bmw is perfect sits very low and a tune it is a monster.
If you like more luxury and don’t want to feel the road and more body roll and a very quiet too quiet exhaust go for the Lexus, but if you after Luxury and excellent sport right down to the beautiful exhaust note the BMW makes, and not about forking out $100000 plus buy the BMW.
Yes the lexus is cheap, but when it comes to engineering the germans have it and you pay for it.
The Lexus is a great car, but for the person whow wants the above,it is not.

    • F1MotoGP

100% agree! No wonder why Japanese car companies not winning in any major championship. (F1, LeMans, WTCC…etc)

  • Mpg

Sorry but do you know that it takes greater engineering excellence to make a car quieter, smoother and more refined.. So it means Lexus is better..

  • Killb

Lexus are known for their high quality, reliability, refinement, comfort, upmost luxury and excellent customer service & care..

Although I’m more of an Audi guy, but I have respect for Lexus and I think they are very good cars.

    • F1MotoGP

Lexus and German cars are high quality but I do not like when people saying Lexus is so good and German cars are much worse. People should read all recalls complains about Lexus too.

What were you saying about that “superior” 335i engine?

BMW of North America says it will recall certain vehicles from the 2007 to 2010 model years to check and possibly replace their fuel pumps.

The luxury car maker says models equipped with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines, all of which use a high-pressure fuel injection system that BMW calls High Precision Injection, may suffer failures of a high-pressure fuel pump. Symptoms of the problem include engines cranking a long time before starting, engine warning lights illuminating and degraded engine performance. Engines may go into ”safe mode,” which is accompanied by a tone and the “engine malfunction” warning light.

The company says it expects repairs to include replacement of the fuel pump, a software update, or both. The recall affects about 130,000 vehicles and BMW expects about 40,000 to need new pumps. Affected models include: 2007-2010 335i; 2008–2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i; and 2009–2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i.

        • Cf

Yeah BMW are unreliable cars and have many problems..

          • F1MotoGP

RoFlmaTiC and Cf what your source??? If I claim something I put my source there. You afraid because you made it up.
Second: please tell me what car you driving.
            Thanks

          • RoFlmaTiC

F1 – My source is the internet, copy and paste a sentence from what I wrote and you will find the page too.

I dont put the source in because caradvice disables links. But if you google N54 engine problem and N55 engine problem you will find hundreds of news articles and threads on the issue.

Do you know how I stumbled upon this problem? I am in the market for a mid sized entry lux car and am choosing between the 3 series, a4 and the is250. On carsales I have seen several 335i for what can only be described as dirt cheap pricing (60k mark, almost in my budget). They are only marginally more expensive than the 325i!!! No wonder why though as I bet most have had engine issues! So it seems be a choice between the 250 and the 325i (as i would prefer rwd so the A4 is out), however I’m hoping that within a year some of these 350s will be second hand and in my price range.

    Beautiful car !

  • Commentator

Pretty cool car, but those front corners would surely limit the pedestrian safety rating.

  • David

Nice car. For all the barbs about it being a Toyota let me say this. I have owned quite a few cars – Euro, Australian, Japanese and Korean. One thing you can say about Japanese technology is that reliability is rock solid and engineering design generally makes vehicles much easier to service and work on.

A few weeks back my wife’s Focus [nice car by the way] had to have an alternator replaced. Very expensive because of parts cost and labour involved.

I am also reminded of the segment from Fifth Gear where the boys compared the time to change a headlight bulb in a Golf and Renault Megane, The former took a minute, the latter about an hour! I often read on forums, posts from mechanics who tell horror stories about maintenance difficulties on Euro cars. So, unless you’re a badge snob, it’s hard to go past Lexus or Honda or Subaru for example.

    • http://ACA Shane

David – Ironically, i just had the alternator assembly replaced in my 2003 V6 Camry Sportivo (manual) today.

I opted to install a genuine Toyota alternator and the part supplied and fitted cost me a smidget under $400 which i thought was resonable for a genuine fitment. Believe it or not, an aftermarket alternator was going to set me back another $100

      • Cf

Yeah it’s very true, the Genuine Toyota parts cost less then the after market ones! Talk about economies of scale..

  • Sq

I love Lexus engine noise.. Below 4000 to 5000 RPM’s they are whisper quiet but when the needle passes the 4000rpm the engine roars to life..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1715760895 Charles Dean

The differenve between Lexus and BMW, Audi, Mercedes is that BMW is the German Idea of luxury where as Lexus is the Japanese idea of luxury, which is towards subtle elegence..

I sometimes wonder whether the people who contribute to these blogs have ever been able to make serious comparisons – ie are they really tyre kickers? I drove an IS 350 Prestige recently and found the car to be outstandingly comfortable, quick, great ride handling -the steering is ok but not perfect..very well put together- I prefer my brother IL’s BMW 250I (brand new) bimmer straight six sound but it is not a game breaker- Bimmer steering is also better for me but not my wife – the Lexus simply blows the Bimmers doors off in power – stupid I know for day to day driving, but nice all the same..the IS 350 (like all cars)It is not for everyone – very tight in the back, smallish boot but thats about it – but Bimmer is not much better here -oh and the price difference!! Lexus economy is fine by me for this sort of performance (9.3!! for something that will run with v8s?? ). Now regarding the “old” interior…if my brothers Bimmer is progress in interior design – lots of cheap looking silver and odd looking “wavy” dash -instruments not a patch on the Lexus -I’ll take the old Lexus with the Corolla clock any day!. I will wait another year when the Prestige will be in the 40′s for a low K car and I will have an absolute bargain that I can afford to own..( I have not driven the IS 350 sports but I hope it rides well enough to be in contention – I have a Honda type R and I’m over punishing suspensions – believe it or not my biggest challenge is to convince my wife that its time to move the old Presara..I think I will win. (60 plus kids gone!)

    • Bingo

Totally agree with you Dasher. Had an IS250 which I traded in for a 1-series Coupe (125i) – while the drive in the BMW is more engaging, the overall quality of the Lexus is way better than the BMW. When I am done with the BMW, I would definitely be returning to a Lexus and this time, it would be the 350!
