2012 BMW 1 Series Coupe, Convertible mid-life update for Australia

The BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible ranges have been upgraded for the new model year, with a number of design, technology and efficiency enhancements, and no price increases.

The mid-life update breathes fresh life into the two-door variants of the 1 Series line-up, with the all-new second-generation 1 Series five-door hatch set to be launched in Australia in October.

New to the range is the 120i Coupe variant, which brings the starting price down more than $8000 to $47,400.

The updated models get redesigned front vertical air intakes that now guide air through the ducts to the wheel arches, improving airflow.

The headlights score a fresh design with a new accent line above the headlight cluster. The taillights feature LEDs when the optional Bi-Xenon headlights are ordered.

The M Aerodynamics package – standard on the 135i Convertible and 135i M Sport Coupe – further enhances the vehicles’ sporty, muscular stance.

The upgrade also includes three new alloy wheel designs, two new metallic paint colours (Marrakesh Brown and Vermilion Red), two new upholstery colours (Oyster and Savannah) and a new Alpine White interior trim.

The most frugal model among the updates is the BMW 118d Convertible. The 105kW/300Nm diesel now uses just 4.8 litres/100km on the combined cycle, down from 4.9 litres/100km.

The hottest model (with the exception of the BMW 1 M Coupe) is the BMW 135i, which is powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine with 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque. Sprint times are maintained (5.3-5.6 seconds) while average fuel consumption has fallen around 1.0 litre/100km to 8.5-8.6 litres/100km.

Fuel consumption and emissions reductions have been achieved across the range thanks to the addition of start-stop and brake energy regeneration technology, depending on the model.

All models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The 118d, 120i, 125i and 123d models are available with a six-speed automatic option, while the 135i variants can be upgraded to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Following its popularity in the BMW 3 Series, the ‘Innovations’ package is now available in the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible. The pack includes Business Navigation, Bi-Xenon headlights and high-beam assist. In the 135i models, it includes Business Navigation and high-beam assist, as well as a Harmon Kardon surround sound system and anti-dazzle exterior mirrors.
