The Audi A6 Avant looks likely to join the A6 sedan in Australian showrooms next year.
Audi Australia’s Anna Burgdorf said the local arm had been looking at the A6 wagon variant with interest and admitted the sharp-styled, versatile Avant could hit local showrooms as early as the middle of 2012.
Ms Burgdorf said Audi was acutely aware of the popularity and importance of large family cars in Australia and said a number of people had already shown interest the A6 Avant.
The all-new Audi A6 Avant was revealed in May showcasing a similar design to the A6 sedan that went on sale in Australia in July.
The A6 sedan is currently available locally with three different engine options: a 150kW/280Nm 2.8-litre FSI, a 220kW/440Nm 3.0-litre supercharged V6 TFSI, and a 180kW/500Nm 3.0-litre V6 diesel.
All three of these engines are available globally in the A6 Avant range, along with a 130kW/380Nm 2.0-litre TDI, and two additional tunes of the 3.0-litre TDI V6: one with 150kW and 400Nm, the other with 220kW and 650Nm.
Although Audi Australia says it is too early to talk powertrains, the A6 Avant is likely to be offered with the same engines as the sedan.
Like the sedan, expect the A6 Avant to hit showrooms with the seven-speed S tronic transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system as standard.
The A6 Avant has a luggage capacity of 565 litres, which expands to 1680 litres with the rear seats folded forwards. (The sedan’s boot is 530 litres and expands to 995 litres.)
The Audi A6 Avant’s overall weight is 70kg lighter than the old model, thanks to widespread use of aluminium, which makes up 20 per cent of the body.
Equipment levels of the A6 Avant will likely mirror those of their sedan counterparts, while prices for the wagon will be slightly higher.
