The New Toyota Supra?

January 17, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

You know when I wrote the Toyota FT-HS Concept article, I was thinking, hey this would be a great idea if it become the next Toyota Supra, and what do you know? Rumours are spreading like wildfire that yes indeed, this car has a great deal of potential to become the next Toyota Supra.

The New Toyota Supra

If your reading this and wondering, “hey whats a Toyota Supra” then perhaps this image will refresh your memory,

1995 Toyota supra

yes thats it, the loud cars with the gigantic wing that you see flying around the city late at night. Believe it or not, they are more than 10 years old and even today their timeless shape and cult following has kept them on Australian roads.

Toyota started the Supra project back in the days when it was still testing the ground to see if it could sell Luxury vehicles in the US, of course, now that Lexus is dominating the luxury segment in the states (and not doing too badly here either), the answer was an obvious yes.

The New Toyota

However a few years ago Toyota went a little crazy, they decided that they no longer needed proper sports cars, they dumped the MR2 (After they turned it into the revolting male hairdresser car, which was its last incarnation), they dumped the Celica (having already dumped the GT4 version of the celicas some time ago) and they had already given up on the Supra back in 2002.

So whilst I say toyota gave up on sports cars, they of course had the Lexus IS series, but since Toyota wants to stay very separate to Lexus, there is no point in counting the IS series as part of Toyota’s sports line up. Hence began the era of “Sportivo” the horrible name associated with front-wheel-drive vehicles that were nothing more than a last minute decision to add some “sportyness” to the brand.

Of course for those who bought the likes of Camry/Corollo Sportivos, the sheer shame of driving a car named sportivo should have been enough disappointment, but Toyota has gotten away with having no real sports car for a very long time!

So enough about Toyota’s mistakes, lets just take a few minutes and admire this car:

Yes its absolutely gorgeous, and of course its only a prototype, but if this infact does turn into the new Toyota Supra, what will it be powered with? Remember how a while ago Car Advice Road Tested the Lexus GS-450h? Yes, you guessed it, this baby is going to be running the same drive train!

“It’s a new kind of sports car for the 21st century, eco and emotion in a sports car concept with a performance target of 0-60 mph (0-100km/hr) in about 4 seconds and a price tag in the mid-$30,000 (USD) range.” Kevin Hunter, the vice president of Calty Design Research

So its going to go up against the likes of the Nissan 350z, and honestly? This is going to be one awesome sports car thats going to catapult hybrid technology into the performance car market! Can you imagine modders going crazy with their electric motor to get more kWs?

Oh and if your wondering why all these photos are not of the real thing, its mainly because the car is currently only on display at the Detroit motorshow, but here is two photos that are of the actual car :

  2. Tim says:

Toyota has sunk big time to make a car look like this. Bring back the old 97 model and they’ll see a big turn around again. People that want speed will go for it and with the new advancements in tuner parts and kits the 97 style (motor and body) would make another big impact. Don’t go with the flow, fight it and make your own way!

  3. Rickycc says:

To be honest it looks more like a new celica than a supra. new models normally bare some resembalance to its predassessor. and its clearly basedaround the celica design.

  4. ScAnDAlouS says:

Don’t do that to the supra! first of all that’s not even close to looking like the Supra. We do want to see a newer model of the supra, but not like that give it a racing look not a futuristic look. Supra is a “one of a kind” please don’t mess it up.

  5. AdiliusTheGreat says:

You guys are right – this is nothing more but a Celica on steroids.

  6. Me. says:

Why Supra, could be a Celica?

  7. Kar1oss says:

Who ever designed this new ‘Supra’ definately overthought the idea. It looks nothing like the supra! All the models leading up to this one can be linked together and recognised. The front of it looks like it could be used to clear snow off the roads. Its but ugly… looks like a honda

  8. KrissyKat says:

yea, i’ve been in love with the toyota supra since i can remember, some would say i’m obsessed, but seriously, why would you do that to the car, we just all want the old one back with maybe a couple new improvements nothing like this at all, seriously i think it looks like a bug or something. please dont put the name supra on this scary thing, seriously they should just release an original agian and watch their sales records go through the roof. i live in a little dinky town in upstate New york, you never see supras, they r rare which mekes another reason to give us some more, i would love the day when i see one pass me on the road very day going to work.
bring us back the car we love!!!

  9. ryan says:

make it look more like the old supra, hope they plan on upgrading the turbo staus.

  10. dan says:

what is this…looks like a car from irobot.. the supra was a 1 of a kind work of art…not to be messed with and you guys totally turned it into a fag car…sorry but it is. i agree if you were to bring back the 97 supra with some upgrades to it you will be raking in so much.

  11. Christian says:

I’ve always loved the supra and a game of cars without a supra is nothing! I love it and I want it. Well the new 1 is very very modern and inside… I kept starring about 1hr [lol]…anyway a great idea again from toyota!

  12. cerberus says:

frankly the old one looks much better than this, maybe it is not the right time we all use this kind of futuristic car concept..if they really want to put some high tech inside the supra…just use the old one…it would a good enough..

  13. andrew says:

i lov supras i was thinkin bout buyin a 94 but wen this is on the streets its my

  14. alfie says:

supra remain supreme in the middle earth

  15. Anthony says:

Guys I know you all loving the old Supra, but that’s for sure Toyota won’t keep any shadow of it. Not many people will pay $40K to buy a car with a very similar shape with the one currently worth $10-20K.
It looks like a Celica because the FT-HS got some sharp edges, but they won’t use the Celica badge since this name is already defined as doggy.
0-100 in 4 sec, consider if it really goes with this price, would just rock.

  16. leng says:

i think that i would be the next supra bu tis it fast as the old supra of is it fasrer then it…

  17. Lalo says:

This new supra sucks!!. The 98 model was great. I loved the supra ever since i saw the movie the fast and the furious. Please don’t make this car the new supra!! It looks ugly and i hate it. Just make it like the 98 supra with some upgrades, better engine, and it would make great car.

  18. master yoda says:

come on ive like the supra since i dont know like 5 years now dont do that to it plus it looks more like a celica and yea the ppl r write plz put the 1997 model back!!!!

  19. Its different yes. I actually like it a lot – could smooth panels a wee tad. It is angular on rump like Celica around 4 or so years ago. I LOVE THE LOOK AND TOYOTA SHOULD BE APPLAUDED AS NOT MAINSTREAM!

  20. Bubba Ganush says:

    Anything but this

  21. Blayze says:

    One word. Filthy…

  22. Cyber Trio Boy says:

I agree I hope they dont do this to the legendary Supra. the car looks like a Celica and prius. No aggresive looks.Old MK4 supras are the best.

  23. Grant says:

This looks ugly as hell dude. Yall done messed up the original Supra.

  24. No Name says:

Cor you lot. If you want a car that look 10years out of date then buy that and save your money. Design has moved on, I for one think this look ace Supra or Sillycar.

Look forward to seeing it on the street and on the PS2 & Nintendo’s!!!

  25. persereikä haiseevitulle says:

This car is a BIGGEST JOKE I HAVE EVER SEEN, MUAHAHAHA!!!

  26. Taylor says:

This car is a real set back. They have jumped ahead and gone too futureistic. Toyota should bring back the ‘96 and ‘97 supra. There would be people lined up forever to get one of those. At least I know I would be. This car looks NOTHING like the old supra anyway. It sucks!

  27. Matt says:

This new ride is the shiz.

  28. bird man says:

This not a new supra i saw the new supra in japanese news paper, the new one looks diffrent acutlly not a big diffrent but with 3.8 ltr 450 hp twin turbo still 6 cylinder enginee and how do u think this the new supra and nissan remove the new skyline GTR faster than porcha GT4.
Man u forget somthing this acomptiton between those four bigest cars name in japan TOYOTA-NISSAN-HONDA-MITSUBISH.
    TOYOTA-SUPRA and new IS350 V8-600hp-0 to 100 in 4sec.
NISSAN SKYLINE GTR 0 to 100 3sec top speed 310
    HONDA NSX- V12 enginee
    LANCER EVO 10 300 hp

  29. CalLuM 1 says:

that supra looks more like an angry snow plough than a sports car brink back the old 97 with a few mods n watch them fly out the showroom

  30. thepunsiherhn says:

i said that nothig close to the scent of a supra even on their wors nightmare please please please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont destroy en leave behind the real supras life!!!! i still prefer mi 86.5 twin turbo toyota supra

  31. Dave says:

Well…If only they would smooth out the edges on it, and not make the front stick out like a snow plow, it would be alright. I mean the inside looks great. But they shouldnt label this as a Supra…the good old 97 supra is great, speed performance, looks. They should bring the old supra back, improve it a bit n watch it sell. Fix this one up too with the edges and a new name n it sell too

  32. ASHEN D SINGH says:

its wild hot and everything a man would need………..that just sums up how this car looks. just tell me where can i get one

  33. Riggs says:

As an owner of a Supra I find the new concept over the top,I would prefer subtle with no drastic changes to the 92-2002 models. I just wish Toyota would get off their ars and bring the Supra back, its an iconic legend which commands a huge following.

  34. LILHAVANATHUGZ says:

DAm go back with dem old models dey look way more better than this car i rather ride with the old models of supra’s such like the onw my dad used to have now i have a supra just like my dad had it but mines is much newer mines is a 1998.so yea go back with the old and also i rede with a Honda

  35. PoisonEagle says:

I hope they actually call it Supra and it lives up to it’s predecessors. AWESOME!!!!

  36. PoisonEagle says:

It’s the 90’s all over again- except Mitsubishi really needs a competitor! A successor to the GTO/3000GT VR-4 which looked hot but they need to do it properly.

  37. Sicmwrx says:

This is definately no a Supra. When you stand next to this concept you will note how small it actually is, it’s close to the size of the last Celica (ZZE123). IF you happen to be in Paris for your Holidays, the car is on display just down the road from the Arc De Triumph (or at least it was last summer).
As other people have mentioned this concept has Celica Styling cues, and so therefore it reinforces which car this represents.
You may remember that the Supra was a variation of the Celica back in the 80’s, same car different nose and bigger engine, but since then it sits on a seperate platform and stuck with RWD, while the Celica went to FWD.
Now that there is talk of the Celica returning to RWD, it understandable that they may again share platforms, but perhaps different wheel bases, and engine choice. So Celica would be you nimble short wheel base car, and Supra the Endurance focussed freeway cruiser.
I can’t see how Toyota would switch to using flat four engines though. For me the choice would be a 2L 3S-GE VVT-iL (BEAMS).

  38. Del says:

I have to agree with Tim. The new supra looks disgusting compared to the 94-98’s. Supras were made to be beastly musle tuners not into some future car. Keep the supra a tuner/collectors car not some luxury junk. Thats why they made BMW’s and Benz’s.

  39. Drifter says:

    too boxy!!!!!

    WTF

  40. steve says:

GAY looks nothing like a toyota supra should.. its a disgrace

  41. i think this car looks really. we have a lot of haters up there, but this is the new centry we do things different. i would love to drive that car. i have always loved th supra one of these days i will have and i hope its that one looks really nice keep up the good work.

  42. Ray says:

its a nice looking car, but needs to have more potential to be a SUPRA!

  43. john says:

this is gay all of the cars will be too cheap

  44. Jaxon says:

Dudes.. What the hell is that?! That ain’t no supra. Thats a freaking disgrace to The name. Bring back the 97′ Model, and see em rock n’ roll otta tha show rooms. That thing is nice.. but, Don’t disgrace the name Supra with it.. It’s cool n all, but.. If you want to bring back the Supra, bring IT BACK!

  45. rick says:

they brought back the supra eh? then mitsubishi should bring back the 3000gt

  46. Wheelnut says:

I agree with you Rick that if Toyota did or they do bring back the Supra.. Mitsubishi should bring back the 3000GT.. And if Mitsubishi did bring back the 3000GT I would definitely have one.. The design the technology the performance & handling of the original was simply Awesome

  47. ANDY says:

I HAVE A 84 SUPRA AND THIS UGLY CAR IS A DISGRACE

  48. Benjamin says:

I WANT THE OLD SUPRA BACK !!!
this one looks like the front of a train lol
    BRING BACK TEH OLD SUPRAAA

  49. macca says:

ive been a supra fan for a few years now, since i bought a 95 model rzs. ive been loving the way it has held its value. if toyota bring out another model this will change dramatically.

supra made a name for its self. nice curves, aerodynamic looks. its just got fast written all over it. the prototype brakes all of these things we have all come to enjoy about the supra.

if Toyota do launch this model, i hope they create a new name for it. celica’s have been around too long and have tainted their name, so it isn’t fitting to bring it back. the supra shape has won so many peoples hearts and should not be changed to fit the new styles of tomorrow.
