2011 Suzuki Swift GA automatic on sale in Australia

By Tim Beissmann |

Suzuki Australia has added the option of an automatic transmission to the entry-level Suzuki Swift GA.

As is the case throughout the Swift range, the four-speed auto comes at a $1700 premium over the five-speed manual. This means the new Suzuki Swift GA automatic will be priced from $17,690 before on-road costs, compared with $15,990 for the manual.

Like the rest of the Swift range, the new variant is powered by a 70kW/130Nm 1.4-litre engine. The auto is less efficient than the manual (6.2 litres/100km vs 5.5 litres/100km), but is still one of the most frugal offerings in the light car class.

The entry-level Swift GA comes standard with seven airbags and electronic stability control, as well as a four-speaker audio system with USB connectivity.

With its $17,690 price tag, the Swift GA automatic undercuts the auto variants of the Ford Fiesta CL ($18,990), Mazda2 Neo ($18,150) and the Holden Barina ($17,990), and closes the gap on the Honda Jazz GLi ($16,990), Toyota Yaris YR 5dr ($17,290) and the Hyundai i20 Active ($17,490).

The 2011 Suzuki Swift GA automatic is available in showrooms now.

Hard cheap looking interior plastics, old school auto… Pleasant styling but too similar to the previous Swift. Nothing to see here… Move on.

I’ve got myself a manual GLX Swift. Yes it has hard plastics inside but what small car doesn’t other than the Polo (which cost much more)and yes it looks similar to the old model (until you park it next to one). The best thing about it is its handling, standard features and great fuel economy. I get 650 – 700klms out of a 42L tank with 85-90% city driving!! And it has one of the best Bluetooth sytems I’ve ever used.

Legitimate cons are – limited rear headroom, no cruise control, tyre roar and some might have leg room issues with the driver knee airbag.

Have to agree, the tyre noise is really offputting… obviously you could change the tyres, but why should you have to… shame about the old 4 speeder…

My lady has a swift sport 2010 , and i find it handles very well , interior front very spacious almost up to my GTI , rear , well not often be any one there .

Interior plastics , looks good for the price , seats very comfy .

Lacks in the torque dept , but once its going its fast fun drive on B roads .

I was thinking of buying a Suzuki Swift GA manual but the lack of a tacho is a real deal breaker. The next model up puts the car up against some stiff competition.

I am waiting for the new Yaris before I decide.

I looked seriously at the Swift GLX and nearly put my money down because it is a fun car to drive with plenty of features and the leather wheel is brilliant, until I saw the servicing costs.
Go to carservice.com.au and the Swift’s servicing will make your eyes bleed. $1200 services, even $700 services are uncalled for in a car with a timing chain.
Finally settled on Honda Jazz GLi (MY12). It may need a service every 10K instead of 15K but in the long run it is much cheaper, about half.
As for the leather wheel, a kit from the US will fix that.

I’m interested how you came to that conclusion? I did a search on that website for a 1.5L Swift Manual (the new model isn’t listed) and compared the service costs with the 1.5L Jazz Manual over 7 years. I used the highest quoted price for all services.

Over 7 years the service prices were:
      Swift – $4045
      Jazz – $4898

Rather than a “every 10K instead of 15K” the Suzuki has 12month services instead of 6 month services.

You do twice as many in the Honda.

Eric, youd almost get a swift in the back of the jazz. The jazz is a far easier car to live with. a lot smarter rear hatch opening ( can easily get bigger things in ) and drop the magic seats, and swift cannot compare.

mines bulletproof, has cost me less than $1000 in repairs in almost 9 years, including brake pads, fuel filter, rear wheel bearings, rear shocks, cant kill it. the ONLY thing id upgrade my ageing 02 jazz to, would be a new jazz.

  • Troy Splann

oh and servicing…. Honda NEVER serviced mine, well they gave me the first 1000km service free, straight after that, oil and filter from honda, local mechanic stamped the book for me after he done the job. average service cost $95
