2012 BMW 3 Series spotted without camouflage

BMW has been spotted driving the new 2012 BMW 3 Series without camouflage out on public streets in Germany. By the looks of the shots, which appear to have been taken by a roof-top photographer, the new best-selling BMW will take on a similar design to the current BMW 5 Series.

The images were first posted up on Bimmerpost.com and show the new 3 Series trundling about without any camouflaging at all. Either BMW forgot to put it on that day or the company is just planning some very sneaky publicity.

From the front, you can see the BMW 3 Series will feature a large heads-up display from the projector module just in front of the steering wheel. This is said to be a new standard feature on all BMW 3 Series models. The new 3 Series will also feature a similar headlight design as the new 1 Series, with highlighted LED 'eyelids' and LED 'angle eye' bulbs.

From the rear, there is clear resemblance with its bigger brother, the 5 Series, in terms of design. The taillights look more embedded into the panel work than the current model, with large bumper bar contours bulging out from underneath. The rear wheel arches also appear to be pumped out like a 5 Series.

As for the engine packages, reports say the new 3 Series will debut in two forms, a 335i with the 3.0-litre TwinPower turbo six, and the new 328i with the all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

More details are expected closer to its official unveiling, which, some speculate will happen next month at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Others say we'll have to wait for 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March to see the full details; BMW is yet to confirm the official date. We'll keep you updated.
