Honda Civic and Honda Insight now available at drive away prices

By Brett Davis |

The Honda Civic Si, Honda Civic Type R and the Honda Insight are now available at drive away prices in Australia.

Honda’s sales have been dropping recently, not just in Australia, but internationally as well. In an effort to recoup the market’s interest, Honda is now offering a select range of its models with on-road costs included in the price.

The Honda Civic Si, the five-door hatch model in the Civic range, is now available from $29,990 drive away in manual form (price is for non-metallic paint). The Civic Si is also available with a five-speed automatic transmission and comes with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine producing 103kW and 174Nm. Other features include electronic stability control, USB/Bluetooth compatibility and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Similarly, the Honda Civic Type R sports edition is now available from $39,990 drive away. All Civic Type R models come with a six-speed manual transmission and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 148kW and 193Nm. It also comes with sporty 18-inch wheels, USB-compatible stereo and Bluetooth.

Lastly, the cheapest hybrid currently on the market, the Honda Insight, is now available at $29,990 drive away. The Insight comes with a Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system, and boasts a fuel consumption rating of 4.6L/100km.

This is basically to make way for the new model coming soon. Feel sorry for those people who paid full RRP for the Civic Si when it first came out…

  • Dave

What happened to you Honda, I remember when you were golden.

    • Charger

i agree its strange just seem to have gone off the boil, it wasent that long ago that the Euro was car of the year, really clever ad’s now it just seems like there is nothing fresh or intresting

      • Lucii Pooky

Nothing interesting? so your saying that the Si and TypeR are un-interesting compared to what? The cruze? the corolla? They must be ultrasonically boring then!!!!! I went to take a look at this car yesterday with my uncle who is thinking of getting it and he was sold! Honda do make good cars, its just that honda also import the POS american models which drag their reputation down.

  • Grady

Poor product planning, poorer quality, higher prices, less variety, poor aftermarket service. The list goes on. Honda you can still redeem yourself. Update the civic sedan and hatch, offer the jazz in sedan form, add wagon bodystyle to accord, smarten the design of the crv, introduce a utility vehicle and add a medium sized SUV also.

    • Charger

      and something with performance!

      • Freddo

Ever heard of the type r? Blow your 2 door sigma into the weeds.

        • Charger

          Ouch! FWD Fanboy!

    • aza

“offer the jazz in sedan form”…the Honda City is basically jazz in sedan form. Too bad they staffed up the pricing, the civic was better value for money. I agree, honda really need to improve their cars.

      • aza

        *stuffed

    • Freddo

Poor quality? You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

      • anthony

        I could not agree more…

      • Yeti Man

I agree, my boss Accord Euro is really well made. More like a BMW quality. IMO

    • Matty B

There’s nothing wrong with the quality of Honda’s vehicles what so ever. The biggest issue is that most of their comeptitors have caught up, and now offer more in their cars for less money.

There’s no point Bringing in an Accord wagon, CRV has been one of their most successful models and it is a mid sized SUV which is due for a new model next year. The Civic is due for an update, they do offer the Jazz in sedan, it’s call a City. Honda will never offer a commercial/utility vehicle in Australia.

Honda Australia just need to tick a few more boxes for standard equipment in their cars, keep the price competive and things will turn around. I’m no Honda fanboy by any stretch, but they still make a good car, they’re just losing out on the value stakes.

      • vti07

If they brought the Honda Ridgeline into Australia, it might sell.

What Honda really needs, is to bring in a range of diesel engines for their cars.

        • Nasal Explorer

I think you’d want more than a “might sell” before trying to introduce a new model to Australia.

  • Grady

Sorry Aza you’re dead right, I wrote it, remembered then forgot to delete, and you’re right about the pricing. It should have started at $17,990 driveway IMO.

  • David

After buying several new hondas over the years I have to say the sparkle has gone. Owning a Honda was something to look forward to, but now everything that made them special seems to have leaked away. Such a shame.

  • Hung Low

They have even gone soft on their Lams sports bike as well, the CBR 250! It has lost 3 cylinders, down on a lot of power and like their cars have gotten boring!

They have the potential, the Type R engines are still brilliant but looks like they tried to play it safe and go for mainstream sales numbers. Now that is failing, its time to get back to your old self Honda!

  • Xander

What ever happened to the Integra and the MDX? Surely they would have made newer generations of these cars? Grady I would add a smaller SUV below CRV – that segment seems to be picking up, and a smaller hatchback below Jazz – the Jazz is a decent size so a smaller hatchback would fit well.

    • JD

They still make MDX under Honda’s premium brand Acura. I’m not sure about the integra.

      HONDA BRING ACURA DOWN UNDER!

  • Pauly

Honda DONT make rubbish cars, quite the opposite.

Its just that Honda Australia dont make enough stuff standard equipment compared to the competition and some of the equipment they do have is just old old old!

    - 5 Speed Autos need to go! bring on 6 speed or more.
    - Diesel? Diesel? Diesel?

Honda can have the CRV and Accord Wagon side by side with no issues. Their compeition do it just fine (Golf and Golf Wagen, Passat and Passat Wagen) and VW Still have the Tiguan selling all just fine. Plus they offer 6 or 7 speed auto boxes and they also offer Diesel!

Honda also need a few more sports cars in their line up stat! the Civic Type R and Honda CRZ are not sports cars, no matter how they want to spin it.

Look I hate to say it, but the only way Honda are going to learn is when all their customers leave and their sales drop. Until then, they are going to keep on pumping out souless crap.

    • anthony

The Accord Euro wagon is a great looking car,saw them recrntly in South Africa.
And the Euro sells well in Europe in diesel 2.2 versions.
The US market even has a V6…

  • Showtime

The last car Honda made with soul was the S2000. Bring back the Integra, Prelude, CRX, NSX!

  • Alexander

I’m all for hybrids, but seriously no wonder the Insight isn’t selling, the IMA hybrid system is crap. The mild hybrid drivetrains are nothing on a full hybrid efficiency wise, they have weak batteries and a basic stop start system. The only advantage they have is that they’re more ‘normal’ to drive. The cost difference is barely noticeable, in most markets the Prius and Insight are priced basically the same – an the Prius is larger more powerful car that drives a whole lot better. There’s a reason Toyota hyrbids are much more efficient in the real world and sell a whole lot more – they actually work! If the Insight was priced at $25,990 drive away, THEN people might buy it.

  • john

drive away pricing..ahh the power of dreams

  • Toyota Guru

Pensioners will be very excited about this news.

    • Charger

they have already ordered the new camry!

      • Toyota Guru

Hey Valiant boy, give up while you’re behind…

        • Charger

just cause you like it in the behind!

          • Nasal Explorer

Request deletion of parent. Uncalled for.

          • Toyota Guru

You really need to get back to your schoolwork now, Valiant boy.

  • Mr Gaspo

The insight must not be selling then. If I had to choose a hybrid it would be a Prius everytime. Looks more expensive, less dumpy looking and has a better hybrid drivetrain with better urban fuel consumption (real world urban consumption for Prius is 5l/100kms and Insight is 6.5+)

    • Alexander

Exactly, I have a neighbour with an Insight and they can’t get urban economy under 6-5.5l/100km, yet 4.0-5.0 in a Prius is easily achieved. Honda needs to overhaul IMA ASAP.

    • Able

I’ve seen two ever on the roads. I’ve seen more first-gen Insights and they only ever sold SIX of them in Australia. Says a lot really…

      • Alexander

I was under the impression that there’s 48 in Australia, all manuals bar one CVT private import.

  • o

Hondas biggest issue is that the new civic just released in the US is getting bad reviews and is a step back from the last model, not good. Especially when I am seeing the new Elantra everywhere.

  • Reputation

It’s a shame the civic Si wasn’t out in Australia in 2008 and priced as well as it is now…. If it had been we would have definitely not bought the Golf we ended up with and got the Civic Si instead. Such a shame, and now we’re stuck with VW’s terrible customer service, not to mention other things!

    • anthony

After owning a Jetta and a Euro,I keep on saying how much better Honda is compared to VW.
I just cannot beleive that now VW are outselling Honda…

      • Reputation

I agree with you 100% anthony! Having owned a VW and a Honda, we are now definately Honda fans, thanks to VW’s absolutely terrible customer service & Honda’s exceptional after sales care!

        • anthony

The quality of the cars are like day and night.
I have owned 4 VWs previously, and loved them, but after changing over to a Honda…NEVER AGAIN.

They are a very arrogant bunch, and more and more people are going to realise this as their cars develop niggles.

  • F1 Guru

Honda should never have left Formula One, history tells us had they stuck around for the 2009 season they would have won in the car that became the Brawn Mercedes…big mistake! They had the engine all they needed was a chassis that could win races – had they stayed the world would have sat and taken notice of them…they didn’t and now look at them…karma’s a bitch!

  • Zac

Something must of being terribly wrong in Honda management if in the year they pulled out of F1, they couldnt ascertain that they were focusing on elements for a serious competitive car in F1 for next season. Selling the team for peanuts which consequently resulted in Brawn Mercedes winning the F1. This is a striking example of Honda losing its way. Its heritage and commitment to racing.

I wonder did passing of Sochiro and internal politics with bean counters in executive management change the dynamics and culture of Honda?

  • anthony

Honda fans are still a very passionate bunch,so maybee there is some hope left ???

    • Reputation

      I’m here!

      • anthony

Pity you did not get a Honda, but hopefully next time around ???
