2008 Jeep Wrangler update

Jeep Australia has announced today that it will launch an updated 2008 model Wrangler with a host of additions to the standard vehicle line-up. The biggest update is the much anticipated CRD off-road group which can be optioned to any turbo diesel model.
The Wrangler range starts from $30,990 for the two door and goes all the way to $45,990 for the 3.8-litre V6 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.
The petrol variant are powered by a 3.8-litre V6 with 146kW and 315Nm of torque while diesel lovers are satisfied with a 2.8-litre four cylinder turbodiesel with 130kW and a massive 400Nm of torque.
Standard features for the 2008 Jeep Wrangler:
- Standard tyre pressure warning lamp
- Standard 17 inch alloy wheels across the entire range
- 2.8L CRD with automatic transmission now has 460Nm of torque (2.8L CRD with manual transmission remains unchanged at 410Nm)
- 3.73:1 axle ratio (replaces 4.10) on automatic models
- Unlimited models now receive an 85L fuel tank
- New colour added called Detonator Yellow
- Dual Top Standard on Rubicon and Rubicon Unlimited (Rubicon axle ratio remains unchanged)
The CRD off-road group pack is an optional extra ($3,000) on Diesel models and includes:
- Rear axle differential locker
- 3.73 Axle ratio (Manual and Automatic)
- Electronic front sway-bar disconnect

I remember a few years back a local garage decided to present these at a Motocross meet. They tried to take them round the circuit, got stuck then got towed out by a Land Rover. Say no more.

And the JK Rubicon is simply the best out of the box offroader you can buy in oz… The land rover with it’s lack of factory diff locks and sway bar disconnects, and its extremely underpowered engine doesn’t even compare!!
Might have been a Renegade – same thing really – it was at the 42nd Patchwick Scramble, Newton Abbot South Devon,UK. Not a made up story, I was there watching Tony Hanes the Devon champ.

I love these things!
Land Cruiser is the best for off roading.

I agree with Jez, I have a Cruiser myself, and have only seen one wrangler off road.
But see numerous ones with surfboards strapped to the top at the beach.

I myself have a land cruiser also, it’s great for Touring, and when you need to do some work out in the sticks!
But none of the cruisers come close to a Jeep Rubicon for straight out of the box off-road ability (well maybe the 70 and 76 with their factory fitted diff locks)… The jeep Rubicon with it’s front and back diff locks, ground clearance, solid axles, sway bar disconnects, 4:1 transfer case is simply the best offroader in terms of capability you money can buy in australia. All the 4wd magazines in Australia state that!! Don’t get me wrong its a fun machine, like a sports car, but not a daily workhorse!!
Not saying the Land Cruiser is bad for offroading, but its not the best.
theres no 4wd to date to have the features of the rubicon at the price they are sellin em mine is stock goes off road and is unstopable diff locks are great power is better and who doesnt like drivin with no roof and no doors these cars rock find a better out of the box 4wd with these capabilities and ill be damned ad lo ratio rock hopper gearing lift and 35\’s and u have 1 serious comp truck!!!

hoping someone can give me some advice,
im buying a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Sport CRD Turbo Diesel all black hard top and the sales guy sadly doesnt know much about them at all so im doing all my research online, the main thing that troubles me is im really not sure if the “CRD” model has the following Standerd,
Rear axle differential locker
3.73 Axle ratio (Manual and Automatic)
Electronic front sway-bar disconnect
or do i have to buy them as :Optional extras:
im getting the Renagade pack with it which is nice because of the 3 peice hard top and the fact that Darwin weather melts faces,
ive put down a deposit and im taking delivery this week so any comments ??

Hey, I own one of these magnificient vehicles..gone 90000 km. They are a great car until the poor part availability takes you off the road..( not to be confused with off-road). I took the car in for a service, on a wednesday ( noting that the brakes squealled). Was told that the discs and pads need replacing, parts arrived on the Friday. Then when I was about to pick up the car was told that the caliper required replacing. Should this not of been discovered on the Wednesday when they worked out that I needed discs and pads. So, then I am told that the parts are ex-Singapore ..8 days (later 8 working days). I have been told by Chrysler Customer Service that the parts are not serviceble and that is why the dealer does not hold the parts. They may not be serviceable..but they are critical spares ( no brakes – unroadworthy).
OK for the dealer but what about Chrysler Australia itself and customer satisfaction ( mine is nil at the moment and will not improve unless they understand how to improve their service to the dealer and ultimately the customer.) I just wait to discover what other non-serviceable parts are 8 working days ex-Singapore. Customer service cited the economic crisis as a problem. Through their poor efforts I am helping it along ( paying lease on a car that is off road, hiring a car to go to work). The request is not for a vintage car part which is no longer available,its a current model vehicle. I could fly to Singapore, eat singapore noodles, soft shell crab, pick up the part and come home within 2 days
No wonder Chrysler has financial problems, they can’t even organise a part for a car
