Mazda Black Limited Edition MX-5 and Mazda2

By Anthony Crawford |

Mazda in the UK have just released details of the ‘Black Limited Edition MX-5 Sport Black and Mazda2 Black and numbers are indeed ‘limited’.

In recognition of the highly successful 205 kW Mazda MX-5 GT race car, which competes in the current Britcar Production GTN Championship, the two ‘Black Limited Edition’ models are said to ‘bring a darker edge to Mazda’s model range’.

The MX-5 GT car weighs just 850 kilograms, and that’s 90 kilograms lighter than original and first generation MX-5 production model.

It’s quick too achieving to podiums and is currently running third in it’s class. That’s a class that also includes more powerful race cars such as those from BMW, Lotus and Ferrari, but the super agile handling MX-5 GT car has been competitive with the competition.

The Sport Black line-up comes with selection of unique paint finishes and enhanced specifications that include a Black powered folding hard top, which will offset the body the special body colours of Spirited Green metallic, Crystal White Pearlescent and Velocity Red mica.

Additional to the list Sport Black extras are a set of gun metal 17-inch dark alloys, black leather with sand coloured stitching, piano black steering wheel and trim along with ‘Black Limited Edition’ badging, floor mats and a unique interior plaque.

The Sport Black Edition is loaded with the same equipment spec as Mazda UK’s Sport Tech model with Climate Control Air Conditioning, Bose audio with Bluetooth hands free, cruise control and front fog lights.

Just 500 Sport Black MX-5 editions will be produced at a cost that is only £360 more than the six-speed Sport Tech model that forms the basis for this special edition.

The Limited Edition Mazda2 Black gets a similar kind of treatment to the MX-5 model, with a choice of exterior colours that include Spirited Green metallic, Crystal White Pearlescent and True Red.

Based on Mazda UK’s 1.3-litre Tamura model Mazda2, the ‘Black’ edition adds a black vinyl roof, matt black 16-inch alloys, privacy glass, rear bumper sports trim, front fog lights and ‘Black Edition’ badging.

Interior features include; Sports interior with climate control air conditioning, Bluetooth handsfree (a Parrot system), electric rear windows, Limited Edition floor mats and a unique plaque.

Only 618 examples of the Mazda2 Black are available at a price of £12, 395 for the True red and £12, 815 for metallic or pearlescent paint jobs.

Disappointingly, these special editions do not receive any performance upgrades above the model variants they are based upon.

  • Toyota Guru

C’mon Mazda, just bring out a Mazda2 MPS for crying out loud!

Pretty lame Special Editions and I say that as a NC MX-5 owner. It would have been nice to seem Mazda shed a little curb weight.

    • Oosh

I too find it ironic they celebrate the success of a light-weight race-car with the release of a special edition that undoubtedly increases vehicle mass.

    • Devil’s Advocate

I would have been nice to strip some weight out as that makes more difference than just adding a few kw….

      • Devil’s Advocate

        *It…. I am having a shocker today….. :-(

  • JP

I have an 08 Mazda 2, & with the 1.5 motor it has, it can barely get out of it’s own way.
Black must refer to the mood of the driver………

      JP.
Why did you buy it then?
Not having a go at you, just wondering …

…..just like virtually every other car from that class when you get down to it. The Mazda2 is actually one of the quicker/peppier ones……

Incidently many of those “micro cars” like the Mazda2/Fiesta/Polo can get to 100km/h quicker than most of the “big 6 family cars” from the 80s-90s…

      • Devil’s Advocate

        Correction, I meant 70s-80s. Damn lysdexia…. ;-)

      • Ford Fairlane

Yea true but the old cars still had more torque and would still lug a large load better than a econo box.

  • Jimmy James

yet another mazda with no power upgrade. LAME.

    • Devil’s Advocate

….and what do you call the Falcon XR6? It is acutally slower than the base model XT due to being heavier… Or the Commodore SV6 over the V6 Calais? There is no power upgrade there. All manufacturers do it in one way or another. Not to mention “power” is not the “be all and end all”.

  • JP

    Josh,

At the time, it was bought as a cheap run-round work car, so I didn’t run up huge kms on my SS.
Nothing hugely wrong with the thing, just not peppy performance.
Now they’ve released a “Black” version, with no extra power……
    It’s a marketing campaign too far……. :-)

    • Devil’s Advocate

Of course it is going to feel sluggish when your other drive is an SS. I know that after riding my motorbike even a fast car feels sluggish and can’t seem to get out of it’s own way.

It is all a matter of what you are used to. If you think the Mazda2 isn’t that “peppy” then don’t go anywhere near something like the Nissan Micra etc! As I mentioned above, the Mazda2 is still one of the more “peppy” cars in it’s class and still quicker from 0-100 than most 6cyl family cars and even some of the 253 V8 powered Holdens from the 70s-80s. That is progress, especially considering base model Commodores/Falcons of today are quicker than many high performance sports cars from that era whilst burning less fuel on the highway than some 1.6-2.0L 4cyl cars from the 70s-80s!

  • JP

Overall point is that it’s not the quickest car in the first place, but you’d expect at least some higher performance from a “Black” edition. A moniker that many other manufacturers use on a higher performance model than the standard one.

As one of my cars is a mazda 2, I would have thought that a “Black” edition might have a little more poke. The chassis could handle it.

Another Black Edition??? For gods sake make a MX5 Powder Pink edition with Barbie decals & I’ll put my deposit tomorrow!

The MX5 looks great in spirit green…
I had a Genki for 2yrs and tracked it a few times and it showed up some fancier and big engined cars….the 1.5i loves to rev so take it where you haven’t buddy……it will amaze you….
