Lexus GS Coupe in the making: rumour

Lexus hasn't unveiled the next-generation Lexus GS yet but rumours are already spreading suggesting Lexus is working on a sporty two-door coupe version. The new coupe would allow Lexus to rival the likes of the BMW 6 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and the Audi A5.

Although details are sketchy at this early stage, a number of international reports have claimed a large coupe variant is on its way. The rumour stemmed from a recent report by Inside Line in the US which interviewed Lexus product planning manager Ben J. Mitchell. Mr Mitchell said the brand was currently undertaking a "fairly active study of coupe opportunities".

"We're really trying to increase the emotional qualities of our brand. We want to emphasise exterior styling and dynamics."

This info isn't quite enough for confirmation that a coupe model will be based on the upcoming GS. The new large sedan is expected to showcase all-new levels of emotion and technology. Reports say the new coupe could also form a successor to the old SC430, offering a similar character, and, hopefully, better looks.

We'll have to wait and see to know for sure. In the meantime, the new Lexus GS will be unveiled in full at this year's Concours d'Elegance event at Pebble Beach on August 18. Stay tuned.
