Daihatsu has unveiled an all-new Daihatsu A-Concept compact hatch at the 2011 Indonesian International Motor Show in Jakarta. The A-Concept may form the basis for an upcoming compact production car which could be sold in Asian markets.

The A-Concept comes from Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM), Daihatsu’s Indonesian auto department, and previews what could be in store for the Indonesian market in the future. It offers sleek modern styling with a matching chic interior, paired with the practicality and economy of a mirco hatch.

Official details of the A-Concept are yet to been released but Daihatsu says the car was designed and inspired with a focus on “Driving Heart to Green Living”. The company said in a recent statement that in coming up with the design,

“ADM took the initiative in planning and designing this model with the aim of establishing it as a close partner for the user by offering excellent design, large interior and trunk space, and fuel efficiency encapsulated in a compact body.”

Reports say the concept may eventually hit production in some form and go on sale in certain Asian and Indonesian markets. It may also be the foundations for an upcoming Daihatsu Mira in Japan.

Overall though what do you think of the look, as far as compact cars go? Let us know in the comments section below.

Er….a touch overdone on teh screens?

  • FrugalOne

You forgot to mention that on Japan-cycle it uses just 3.3l/100km, who needs a smokey gutless cancer causing DIEsel!

Indonesia drives on the same side as us, Toyota own Daihatsu do the math = could easily be sold here in AUS.

$9990 driveaway??, go on BigT[tm.F.0] do it, import it and spank all these korean and Chinese johnny-come-lately time to flex your muscle again

No need to bring back the Daihatsu brand, just stick a Toyota badge on it and it will sell like hotcakes.

Great little car with legendary reliability, shame they are no longer available in Australia!

    • PhantomHamster

Yeah the current series Terios, sold in Asia is an awesome little 4wd, like a baby rav4… shame we dont get that here….

Headlights off the new Rio, grille looks like it’s from a Hyundai and the rear lights are from the AM Cygnet…

    …real original.

    • PhantomHamster

yeah did they steal the green colour from Kermit the frog… ??? and considering the AM Cygnet is actually a Toyota its hardly a good example of orignality…

      • Martin V.

        What a stupid comment.

The Cygnet may be a Toyota, but Aston Martin still make changes to make it look a little different (In case you didn’t realise). This Daihatsu has copied the rear lights that Aston Martin put on the Cygnet. Plain and simple.

3.3L/100km and how big’s the engine? 700cc? I bet it moves really well NOT! Give me an Alto diesel as sold in India. Similarly excellent fuel consumption yet with a much longer range and something called TORQUE, all lacking severely from this toybox. There’s a reason why they stopped selling Daihatsus here and this shows why!

I really love and respect Kei Cars, but their purpose is for small and crowded streets (Japen, Europe) and not Australia, we’re just too open. A Suzuki Alto (the Japanese Kei model, not the world model I mentioned above) would be much better!

I read somewhere that Daihatsu designed the engine in the Toyota Yaris. I would say that Daihatsu couldn’t compete with the bargain basement Korean/Malaysian cars at the time. Also, in those days, light cars weren’t as popular as now.

hmmmm looks like they got rid of traditional side mirrors ….. “objects in screen are closer than they appear”

    • Brayden Cresswell

Why would you want to look at a screen instead of a side mirror that just makes no sense to me.

  • APersonWhoKnows

Impressive… The Japanese makers come once again. Not just the most reliable but also the most beautiful designs… LOVELY
