Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 unveiled

By George Skentzos |

Volkswagen has finally revealed the official details surrounding its race-prepped Scirocco GT24 that will participate in the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race in two days.

This incredible machine features a highly-modified version of the car’s standard 2.0-litre TFSI engine pumping out 242kW and maximum torque of 340Nm at 2,100rpm.

“The Scirocco GT24 with the blue-white finish sits so low on its extended wheel wells that a hand will not fit between the wheel arch and the tyre. Yet the race car remains unmistakeably a Scirocco from every angle. Just even wider, even longer and even lower,” says Volkswagen Chairman for Development Dr Ulrich Hackenberg

Power is transferred to the front wheels through VW’s 6-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox, identical to the transmission used in the road-going model.

The interior has been entirely stripped down and fitted with a full roll-cage, Recaro racing seats with five-point harnesses and a competition steering wheel – adding up to a total weight reduction of 178kg.

The car will be driven by a team of racers including rally world champion Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck, three-time winner of the 24-hour Nürburgring race.

when can we get a steer in it?

  • jbot

Love it. Looks great, will no doubt handle very well. Will be interesting to see how it handles getting all that power down to the front wheels (assuming I read the article correctly – FWD?) That’s massive power though from a 2L. Bring it out with even 200kW, and it will be very popular!

Think it would have to be 4WD surely? All that power and FWD is wrong! Nice aggressive purposeful look!

  • RoFlmaTiC

Surely it can’t be FWD? The massive spoiler can’t be for FWD… big spoiler + big power + FWD = lift off!

  • aubz

Now that should be the engine in the S3 and Gti! Or the car itself should go into production hehe.

  • Doh

Will be interesting to see how the DSG holds up.

Promo video of building & testing the racecar if anyone is interested:

Very cool, i think Volkswagen should provide the option of a high performance AWD model with slightly more aggressive looks, call it the Scirocco Jet Stream or something, and a lower performance FWD model, much like how Subaru have done with their WRX and STI. I think if i were not to plant to have to drive around my children i think the former model would be the realistic dream machine for me.

This thing is just beautiful – and it promises to go as well as it looks too.

The attention to detail in the interior is breathtaking, it is pure function but looks stunning.

I wonder if they’re planning to market the car in exactly this form, and perhaps start a Scirocco cup race class as Porsche does with their cars. They are all in the same stable now.

The Sciroccos have qualified in 1, 2 and 4 in class for the Nürburgring 24h. Not a bad debut. :)

  • Flying High

Very nice. I canna imagine getting a hatch to look a lot better than this! Well done VW :-)

    Scirocco 11th, 15th, 32nd
Obviously goes as well as it looks, and there is no problem with the DSG gearbox. :)

Commodore 31st Very nice effort :)

Lexus 121st Oh, dear…..Ugly car, ugly result. :(
Chin up Toyota, it’s no disgrace to be beaten by Fiestas and Commodores and almost every other make and model – or is it. Haha

Thanks for the results posting, Reckless1.

If I read this bsite correctly, they all started out in spots 116, 117 and 118, so their respective finishing positions amongst the Porsches is good going.
