2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 could get 570hp engine: rumour

If rumours on the net are correct, the upcoming 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 might get a 425kW (570hp) V8 engine. The new model will sit in between the ballistic 476kW Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the closest thing to a four-door Corvette, the 415kW Cadillac CTS-V.

Although it is just a rumour at this stage, it would be a fitting engine to power the new beast. Reports say General Motors has tested the engine on a dyno and has come up with figures higher than 425kW. If this is the case, it will pitch the ZL1 nicely up against its arch nemesis, the Ford Mustang GT500.

The new ZL1 will come with a revised version of the 6.2-litre General Motors V8 engine also seen in the Cadillac CTS-V. Reports also suggest the ZL1 will be backed up by either an automatic or manual gearbox option, and say the car will come with a new active suspension system.

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will become the company's new flagship model and will rekindle the spirit of the original ZL1 of 1969. The classic model was one of Chevrolet's fastest ever cars at the time, showcasing a 427 cubic-inch V8 producing upwards of 330kW.

The new ZL1, first unveiled at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, will include a beefier new body with an aggressive nose and low front spoiler, as well as a chunky rear end with prominent rear haunches.

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will go on sale in the US in the first half of next year.
