World’s first electric vehicle highway to go up in Washington

The first electric vehicle highway is being planned for Washington. The highway will feature a number of recharging stations plotted along the stretch of road to facilitate EV drivers and help them reach their destination.

It's an ongoing concern for motorists considering adapting EV transport, the constant fear of running out of electricity mid-journey. Initiatives like this are expected to bolster motoring infrastructures in the future and this highway will be the first.

The highway will be located between Interstate 5 and US Route 2 in Washington. The road will feature recharging stations placed every 65-97km apart. Washington's Department of Transportation announced specialist company AeroVironment would be enlisted to install the stations.

Each station will include two different outputs of charging systems. There will be a range of Level 3 DC fast charging units with an output of 480 volts, these will be capable of recharging most EVs in around 30 minutes, and there will be a number of Level 2 units which will be capable of recharging in around 4-6 hours.

The only problem that may arise is whether EV motorists will be banked up waiting for their turn of the charger. Such difficulties will be examined once the highway is up and running.

Building will commence later this year.
