2012 Lexus GS spied on the Nurburgring for the first time

Lexus has been spotted testing the all-new 2012 Lexus GS on the Nurburgring for the first time. The new model will take much of its inspiration from the recently unveiled Lexus LF-Gh Concept car that was shown at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne earlier this month.

Although this prototype Lexus GS is covered in plenty of black camouflaging, it is easy to see the resemblance to the LF-Gh Concept. The front showcases a sturdy handsome look with an aggressive lower bumper bar and chin spoiler, while the side and back exhibits a solid slab-like appearance with curved panels. The front end also appears to feature a large grille and air intake surface area for the engine.

Engine details are a little scarce at this very early stage. Some international reports say a GS-F version will feature the 5.0-litre V8 engine also seen in the Lexus IS F. In that it offers 311kW of power and 505Nm of torque. As for the standard models, they're are likely to get a hybrid powerplant of some description. Lexus is refusing to budge when it comes to revealing any official engine specifics though. Even with the LF-Gh Concept car, what's under the bonnet remains a mystery.

The 2012 Lexus GS sedan will rival the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Audi A6. It is likely to offer vast technological advances in on-board equipment compared with the old model, with options such as radar-guided cruise control and automatic parking set to become the norm.

The new 2012 GS is set to be unveiled in production trim sometime later this year. We'll keep you updated.
