Ford FG Falcon TV Ads

Ford has definitely taken a unique approach in advertising its new FG Falcon range, presumably deterred by the number of complaints ‘enthusiastic’ car commercials tend to attract.

Personally I preferred the Falcon burnout in the RTA ad - which was for safe driving, go figure.

    Typical Ford marketing rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That ad does nothing to highlight any of the major advances the xr6 turbo has for a prospective customer!!

I could do better myself and I challenge Ford Marketing to contact me (ask caradvice for my email)
I am a ford fan and the only reason I would buy one is because I already know myself what the car is like…. and this ad had nothing to do with it…. infact, I find it embarrassing as a ford owner

Marketing should reflect the quality of teh car… and this ad fails miserably!!
    Makes me angry

To me dumb marketing again from Ford. Soft c$%k ads. I reckon they may as well have a hand on their you know what as those ads are for fairies!. I love my FORDS but that is ridiculous. Have we lost all hope…….

Phill, i think there trying to tell the torque by towing the boat.

But id have to agree what a crap ad! I prefer Holdens and Toyota ads like the TRD Ute, i reckon is good but holden revoloution of the ute i reckon is wonderful, thats what you call a good car ad! Its got no humour but its still good!

    (Report)

  6. Phill Says:

Duck - It would be good if thay said class leading torque while showing the boat being towed.I love Fords also but not there ads Holden and Toyota ads are better.

WHAT? Where’s the claim about it being better than a BMW….?

Seriously Ford, very pretty, nice music, but you’re gonna have to do better than that. I liked the XR8 Ute (Blokes World) ad, why not something similar.

Toyota Hilux “Bugger” ad, has got to be one of the best Aussie car ads of recent times….

  12. Andrew M Says:

they need to do more ads like they did for the territory. the territory was a totally new entry to the vehicle scene and they sold the pants off it.

one ad in particular that was awesome, was the territory Turbo where they quoted “eats sports cars for breakfast”

that was funny, clever and stayed in your mind. it made you watch to the end to find out what was going on.

im with Alec, and my email address is totally open to ford execs if they wish for others to show them how ads should go.
the only ones they will sell it to are those that already know the bucket load of great traits within the falcon.

whats the oint of restructuring the nameplate line up to attract and shake up their audience if they arent going to have ads to catch their attention in the first place

  13. B///M3 Says:

That add sux so bad, the woman is obviously trying to kill time, I guess they’re trying to show how truly boring fords really are. But have to give them credit for not trying to compare it to the best, like Holden tried to measure up against the BMW…..hah what a joke!

They need ads that sell the car… these 30 sec ads show like 10 seconds of car! :( (exaggerating…)

The ads need to talk about all the new advances in the new Falcon that stops customers thinking it’s the same car (esp since they look very similar at first glance)

    EEK!!! Goodbye Falcon!

It might be ok for people who already like Fords, but for others who don’t know, the average Joes and Lemmings need to see the features on TV so they might actually go to the dealer for a test drive.
I could do better, I’m not in advertising, but I know what people want to hear…

Oh, and another thing ,in the the XR6 turbo ad, the little jet ski being towed behind the XR6 turbo should have been a larger boat , at least 1800kg,(about a 20 foot boat), now that the FG turbo’s tow capacity has been increased from 1600kg to 2300KG like all the other Falcon series. (lower charge temp due to bigger intercooler? - about time we got to use that meaty low-down turbo torque!).

    (Report)

  26. Andrew Says:

Hey G series, you and I know that Ford doesn’t have to prove anything, but if it wants to crack the Go betterer, look at us , we’re true Aussies (yeah right!)morons, and Toyota ‘never break down crowd’ etc, they have to change their ad styles and be agressive to stay on peoples minds.

I like the style of the new Lancer ad, it shows all a lot of the features of their new car, even shows it “driving recklessly :)” - in a computer game to get around the “can’t show a car driving fast or agressively” etc laws. (Yes, we can thank ONE do-gooder in the U.K. for complaining about a car ad so many years ago).
Now our car ads have to be sedate and serene, can’t even show it on a track driven by a professional driver.(remember the BA GT ad at bathurst, started with the XY GT then morphed in the BA GT?).

i fully understand that ford are trying to break the mould of stereotypes that exist about aussie vehicles, but if an ad doesnt catch your attention, its wasted $$$$

for an ad to catch someones attention it doesnt need burnouts or chopper chases.
but on the other hand they need to try harder.
there are plenty of great ads out there that dont use burnouts and still catch your attention, whilst at the same time maintaining dignity/respect/class/prestige etc etc

you can say that holden and toyota dont fall under those ads…i mean the toyota corolla ad that melts everything? um…right…pure gen y’er marketing…blatant eye catching but nothingness to it…

seriously…you people who claim you know marketing should be marketing your own stuff and see if people buy it from your crude and misunderstood way of trying to sell ice to eskimoes…

i think ford is trying to show its product is more polished…and getting people even a little hooked and want to test drive it…then they would buy it…whereas toyotas and holdens ads are just look at moi look at moi…im a yobbo aussie car…puh-lease!

    (Report)

    (Report)

  47. Andrew Says:

    Dear John,
If you had a good read of this blog, you will notice 99% of us are critising the typical limp wristed Ford advertising, not the product itself, and I wouldn’t consider most people to be astute when it comes to car research, a lot are lemmings, are ill informed and are swayed by pretty lights and pretty colours.
They need to get the attention of the traditional non Ford fan, the type who thinks that it’s only good as a taxi or uses as much fuel as a Hummer etc (even though the I6 has been equal or better to Commodore for years in the fuel economy dept, and superior in power/torque).
Ford has always had to try twice as hard in their campaigns in this country behind Holden etc because of the image that Holden is the “great Aussie car company”, maybe it was once, but not since 1987 when it was bought out 100% by GM USA (about the same time they started using ancient pushrod Buick V6’s in the VN).
PS, check out the origins of the Commodore, and you will see links to an Opel Rekord and then Opel Omega. -Not really an Aussie icon as they would have you believe in the hype ads.
Toyota’s product aint as good as what it once was, but theyre cashing in with their in your face everywhere campaigns too.

    John,
you have very fair points there but, they new ads do nothing to brag about the true qualities of the vehicle they are trying to sell.

yes even though the toyota star jump themed “oh what a feeling” is pretty dawky, it is a catch phrase that is remembered and you will find kids on trampolines around the country doing it.

the marketing game is about implanting their brand name into heads till it comes to a point where when people think car they think “X”.
that is what toyota has done so well. they have stayed with name plates and slogans longer than anyone else.

sorry but i think the new falcon deserved a better advert.

im all for them using classy ads rather than burnouts and video game transformations,
but they have to still catch your attention.

and if you are waiting for people to experience it for them selves at the dealer, then whats the point of advertising in the first place.

they need a bigger draw card.
talk up the comfort a little more. or the quality.
or tell people that the falcon is worth a look to those that think the category is not for them.

    (Report)

  58. Andrew Says:

Mad, most of the Falcon/territory range have had a 2300kg tow capacity for years now, Falcon has long been renowned as the best towing sedan, very stable too.
I know this as my previous company car was an AU2 Falcon and could tow a 2000kg boat up to 110km/h before it felt unstable, now with another company car (VZ wagon with pathetic IRS), it only gets up to 85 km/h before the same boat gets unstable, even though the wagon has a longer wheelbase. (not to mention I miss the extra torque and body quietness while towing -VZ doors creak a bit while towing).
The previous Turbos were only rated at 1600kg, now with bigger intercoolers etc, they match the rest of the range (2300kg).
Compare that with 2100kg max for Commo, and 1600kg Aurion.

And as stated before, we are bashing Ford advertising, for not giving it a good go, not the car itself.

Yes, you are correct, if you buy a car just coz of the ad, regardless of any other knowledge, then yes you are an idiot, problem is the Toyota and Holden ad campaigns drum their messages through and before you know it , the lemmings are sucked in.
Like we’ve said before, you have to get the buyers interested so they will actually want to visit a dealer and check it out for themselves, not just think “oh well it’s just another low tech taxi and because Holden and Toyota sell more cars, they must be better etc”.

I looked at both on the weekend and like to think I am open minded enough to be unbiased. I looked at an SS I have to say I was quite disappointed with the cabin quality. The centre console felt very weak and flimsy, I grabbed the left hand, hand brake blank and the whole thing warped and shook all over the place, The steering wheel felt like it had just been removed from a bus and the rim was way to thin, the cruise control on the end of the indicator stalk was very have to use. $1B worth of investment sure didnt feel like it. From there went and had a look at a new FG and have to say that I was quite impressed. everything was were it should be, and felt very solid. Cabin quality and use of materials was very impressive. I think you need to get the blinkers off and look at what is out there

  65. Golfschwein Says:

ScottT, I checked out both at our recent motor show. I agree with most of your comments on the Holden interior. There’s lots of nasty plastic ‘flashes’ (moulding marks) around the centre console and hand brake area. The dashboard finish is nice in the VEs, but why is it the only area so finished? The upper doors and lower dash areas have the old-fashioned animal grain. I mean, if Mitsubishi managed it with the 380…

But it’s no bed of roses inside the FG, either. The interior door pulls are slimy and flexible, I’m pretty much over the lashings of metallic grey paint used on the console and dash and the doors close terribly. My tip would be to wind the windows up first if you’re trying to impress friends.

Really the new falcon isn’t much different to the BA BF
those crappy looking head lights are just plain wrong..

    (Report)

  67. Andrew Says:

Ok Mad, so if the FG aint much different to BA/BF then that means an old BA at least equals or spanks an all new VE?

Take a look at the Ford website and check out the 3D CAD (that’s computer aided design) animation showing all the NEW parts used on FG, not much huh?

And as far as headlights go , the VE ones don’t look much different to BA….

    :)
Both of these Aussie market cars aren’t the best in the world, nor do they claim that (although Holden reckons the VE is better than a BMW 5 series at steering), but I don’t think that much else compares in versatility and metal for your money for the price.

    (Report)

  68. PoisonEagle Says:

The headlights are similar to the Mondeo’s, which are actually stunning. Although there are similar elements to BA/BF, the silhouette and execution are completely different. Maybe you need a new guide dog, Mad.

    (Report)

  69. Andrew M Says:

    Andrew,

totally agree. (great name by the way)

FG is so different that only the biased wouldnt notice.

what ford needs to do IS capture an audience. the adverts need to catch your attention because they need to grab those that dont have the falcon on their shopping list to check out.
its fair enough saying that people will test drive all the makes, but they will only test a few and most will be in the same class.

they need to capture those that think falcons are only taxis or believe they are fuel guzzlers and say “hey come and have a look, we are better than you think”

the Hyundai 130 advert is a great example where the valet parking guy says there are no koreans in the parking lot, but rather only europeans.
they are saying, “hey you guys that would never dream of walking into a hyundai showroom, come check us out NOW!!!”

    Golf,
on saturday just gone, i made a trip to my local dealer to check out the FG falcon.
to my disappointment they only had an XT sedan in the yard.
i got him to unlock it so i could have a sticky beak.

i didnt find any of the problems you speak of. i didnt “Slam” the door but i closed it a few times on my exit even with one gentle finger, and it seemed ok.

i then for a direct comparison went and jumped straight into a mondeo. i felt the better quality/comfort was in the falcon
you cant beat the falcon for comfort!!!!!
mondeo seats have nothing on falcon seats. even the mondeo cloth quality has nothing on the falcon quality.
the mondeo gear shift is too far forward compared to the falcon. unless you have short legs you will have to lean forward out of your seat to select a gear.
with the falcon you can remain back in your seat, with your elbow on the console, and still comfortably reach the gears.
the leg room is impressive in the mondeo but it doesnt seem to have the falcon width.
dont get me wrong, the mondeo is a great car in its class, but it still doesnt have the comfort of the falcon

perhaps the one at the show was a mule???

i asked the dealer why he didnt have any utes yet as i had seen them getting around on transporters and heard of them around the traps,
and he said the ones i would have seen/heard of would have been what he termed as “hybrids” which were slapped together models for shows etc. he said they usually start to fall apart after a bit of touring.
ute production only starts this month
perhaps the sedan you saw at the show was also just a slapped together Hybrid??

Mr Ford your adds are a waste of money, Doesn’t promote the product at all. Need to catch the imagination.

TP, I know people that go straight to the Toyota dealer regardless.

Latest “Holdens drive better” are good adds.Daewoo is GM now so shut the F up detractors.

I sat in an FG XT yesterday, and i was happy with the comfort, and head room (Im 6′3″), much better than the BA/F. I didnt like the space under the central instrument controls at the front of the centr console, too small for my big paws. Id rather 1 big compartemnt, than the 2 small ones…. Thats my only flaw though.

    Andrew M,

I too have seen plenty of utes. The first FG i saw was an XR8 ute. I also saw a truckload of F6 or GT utes leaving FPV HQ today…..

OK Mad,according to your superior automotive knowledge and keen eyes, the FG is mechanically the same, and looks the same as a BA/BF and now looks the same as a Mazda 3.
I think someone has been beat and is now clutching at straws.
    Case just getting started…. :)

They were probably the same cars that were used in the other national previews, Andrew M, come to think of it. Pre-production, then. Bavarian Missile (where IS she? Oh yeah, I remember now) and I looked sideways at one another as the opened left front window rattled sideways in its track 3 millimetres each way as I gently closed the door.

    The Mondeo impressed me more.

  78. Oz. Says:

I’d rather watch these commercials on ford’s website, they much clearer and are not compressed like these YouTube ones are.

I’ve seen alot of negativity on these ads, I’m sure Ford’s marketing is working on alot better ads, but I think they should of used an up-beat catchy tune. Holden have a song they used since the launch of the VE that I think went “Baby I’m Ready to Go” and I think that was alot better marketing than the new Ford ones. So I hope this isn’t the last of the FG ads and there’s alot more to come.

These first FG ads suit the G-Series but they a bit smooth for the XR’s. It took me awhile to ignore the irritating finger walking and concentrate on the music and scenery of the rural country side. The ads are nice and pleasant when you ignore the friggin fingers but Ford need to make ads that are upbeat and catchy.

  79. Mad Says:

When i first saw the ford ad on tv, i thought it was the new yellow pages ad \” let your fingers do the walking\”

Hey jetski pull your head, fords marketing is pathetic to say the least, the new ford ads are a prime example of this, and show that this is fords weakest link.

So jetski PISS off back to where you came from..

  82. Ford G Series Says:

In the end ads mean little, the reviews, awards, and better overall vehicle makes the sale… Holden people should drive one and see why FG is miles ahead of the VE.. the BA-BF was better but the media felt sorry for Holden not winning many awards….

    (Report)

  83. Mad Says:

In the end if ford dont sell there cars, ford will close,
Holden have won many awards for the VE commodore, and yet also to see, if the FG is better.

    Game over ford

“the BA-BF was better but the media felt sorry for Holden not winning many awards….”

Ford G Series, PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME CRAP! (Your talking about better than the VE arent you? Sounds like you are!) You have not proof or facts to back that up so dont give me CRAP THATS NOT EVEN TRUE!

Ford G series wants to talk about something he needs to give the FACTS not the CRAP! He thinks HOLDEN is crap, which is wrong. But he just makes silly little comments that arent true trying to think that they are!

    (Report)

  88. Duck Says:

Mad, yo also get some ford people saying that the BA looks the same or better than the VE, that really annoys me! Can’t they just admit that the VE is better, its alright you want go over to holden just saying that. It’s like me saying “The VT Commodore looks better than the BA Falcon”.
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz…………those type of people need to GROW UP!

    (Report)

  89. Joober Says:

Duck, you’ll always get these type of people regardless, Plenty of ‘fanboys’ from all manufacturers even outside of the car industry. Its like take that one thing from their life, and their life is meaningless… lol.

    (Report)

  90. Duck Says:

I’m a Holden boy but hey comparing the BA to a VE for looks you have got to admit is stupid. Agree? But yes you are right Joober.

    (Report)

  91. Joober Says:

IMO yep the VE looks better than the BA, the BA look is aging. Though the BA-BF was better against the VY. But then again thats my opinion only, some people differ.

Its fine to prefer a brand but theres a point taking it too far, to me, with corporations, you have to give as much loyalty to them as they give back to you, its the competitive nature of business!

    (Report)

  97. Andrew M Says:

    TP,
once you see the FG in the skin you will notice it isnt that similar to BA.

i first saw a FG XR6 last week in the flesh at the shopping center raffle,
and i must say it looks remarkebly different.

yes it is recognisable as a falcon, but it is certainly not the same car.

i saw my first FG on the road today parked outside a shop, and driving past in the dark even in the rain, i knew it instantly to be a new FG

park a BA next to a FG and you will realise how silly the “Too alike” claims are.

even NM was openingly saying they look too the same, but once he reported seeing one in the flesh, his tune greatly changed.

every single angle of the FG states it is a different beast

even the rear looks heaps classier over the out going BF

the tail lights have to be seen in the flesh to appreciate.

its not a frosted lense like on the SS etc but rather very clear and detailed assembly

    (Report)

  98. Mmmmm Says:

Similar to the BA?? I THOUGHT IT WAS A BA!!
I saw an XR6 in that blue. I had to look atleast 3 times to make sure it wasn’t a BA. I said to my mate, sitting beside me “Look, the new Falcon!” and he said “Is that NEW??”.
Even he thought so, and he doesn’t know anything about cars.
It’s an improvement over the outgoing BF, but that isn’t hard.

  100. Watto_Cobra Says:

They were advertising the effortless towing torque of the XR6T. Should’ve been a 30-footer to drive the point across apparently.

    (Report)

  101. Duck Says:

    Deft?

    (Report)

  102. Mmmmm Says:

A Jet-Ski prooving how much torque it had? A bloody Aurion can tow one of them without much fuss. A 30 footer can only be towed by a large 4×4 (The new Whittley is the biggest cruiser trailerable boat in Australia). Maybe a nice fibreglass bow rider or cuddy cabin would actually get the point across……

    (Report)

  103. Watto_Cobra Says:

I don’t know much about boats, just mentioned 30-foot as a number to say that I thought a jet ski DOESN’T get the point across like a much larger load (boat, caravan, whatever), would have.

    (Report)

  104. TP Says:

AndrewM Ive seen it in the flesh… I know its new and so do you, but I can undertand why your avg person cant, because it has alot of similarities. Wheels highlighted this, the FG didnt get much attention at all. Its just a sleeker looking BA.

    (Report)

  105. Watto_Cobra Says:

I partially agree with you TP.

The average person will be hard-pressed. I can spot the difference from 100m.

To some it may seem a sleeker BA/BF but anyone in the know, knows it is much, much more underneath.

    (Report)

  106. Mad Says:

The ad shows the new falocn towing a ski boat WTF is that all about, you wouldv’e thought it copuld tow a lot more then should a tow rag……

  110. Pablo Says:

I got an FG as a company car last week. It is so much better than the BA I had before & a lot better than the VE.
It doesn’t really get noticed as a new car when sitting in a carpark of Falcons & Commodores at work but the people that don’t notice are really into cars anyway.
The whole package is a BIG step forword. Acceleration is great, handles good, stops good, fuel economy is improved, the interior is good & the engine/gearbox combination make the VE look like a VN.
The FG is a very hard car to fault.

    (Report)

  111. sed Says:

Had a look at the FG the other night and found that the finish is some what dissapointing, the paint on the bumperbars is different to the rest of the car.
    Pretty poor ford.
