Ferrari buyers ditching red in favour of other colours

Enzo Ferrari may not have said, “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is red”, although for years that was the case with supercars produced by the famous Italian sports car manufacturer.

The trend peaked in the early 1990s, when 85 per cent of the cars produced by Ferrari sported a racy red livery. The colour has always been synonymous with Italian cars and drivers and for a long time red was almost an obligatory colour choice for Ferrari customers.

That’s all changing, however, with Ferrari’s palate expanding dramatically over the past few years.

In Australia, the Ferrari 458 Italia can be ordered in seven non-metallic colours, nine metallic and 10 classic colours inspired by the 1950s and 1960s. Customers can also opt for a two-tone paint option, which expands the number of unique exterior combinations to 676. (If you're keen for a play, you can access Ferrari's configurator here.)

You can also supply Ferrari with a paint colour sample of your choice, and the craftsmen at Maranello will match it, meaning the personalisation possibilities are infinite.

Even with all the choice, 45 per cent of new Ferraris are still finished in red, although the shift in the past 20 years has been dramatic. Special order finishes have been among the most popular in recent years, climbing from just one per cent of sales in the early 2000s to more than 10 per cent in 2010.
