Volkswagen Scirocco R at Australian International Motor Show 2011

By Brett Davis |

Volkswagen has lifted the curtains off the Volkswagen Scirocco R at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne. This is the first chance Australian’s have had to see the Australian-specified model in the flesh.

The top-spec Volkswagen Scirocco R will be the only model to go on sale in Australia, and it will replace the Volkswagen Golf R three-door. This is a good thing, because if you’re after a Golf R three-door, chances are you’re after a sporty hatch. The Scirocco R is exactly that, and some.

It features the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the Golf R, producing 188kW of power and 330Nm of torque. It also features a six-speed manual transmission as standard and will come with the DSG dual-clutch automatic as an option.

Performance figures for the sporty hatch consist of 6.0 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint in the DSG, and a slightly slower 6.2 seconds for the fully manual version. Top speed for both variants is 250km/h.

Think of it as a Golf R three-door which has been treated with a sleeker, lower body and fresh front and rear ends.

The new Volkswagen Scirocco R will go on sale early next year.

Wow. A VW that actually looks cool. Finally.

All depending on the International Markets going well and jobs strength here, they should be a pretty good seller here in Australia. Maybe a youth package model would go well with a few extra bits and pieces at a good price. Should be like the old Beetle was when I owned a couple of in the 70′s,an everybody’s car.

  • Jim Sim

Wow. Look at all those bum sniffers in the background. Awesome car for the bum sniffing type.

    • Uranus

      Hahahahaha

  • Justin

Is this awd because I read somewhere that it was fwd, really confused me.

    • ST

FWD is it not? Just a Golf R with another body.

Hate the green, much better in the blue they’ve been bantering around on the net.

    • zahmad

Yes, Scirocco R is FWD only while Golf R is AWD only.

      • Uranus

Why would you buy a performance Hatch/Coupe like the Scirocco R?

Unless you really love the model of the car because in terms of performance the Megane RS 250 kills it hands down.

Well it’s great to see we have more to choose upon!

        • David

Why? Maybe because the Scirocco looks cool and by all accounts goes very quickly. The Megane may go quicker but, like the WRX, it’s been belted with the ugly stick once too often.

I would choose any number of hot hatches over a Megane 10 times out of 10. You have to have some self-respect when you’re seen in a car!

  • Freddo

So round and uglg. Not a fan of the look at all.

    • Captain Nemo

Couldn’t agree with you more Freddo. Looks like a jelly coated suppository but the cashed up Bogans will love it.

      • bangel

Cashed up bogans cant handle a FWD , might have to get their girl friends to teach them in the spark .

More looks than any GM daewoos currently available .

        • Freddo

I leave the FWD for the Mrs shopping cart. Nothing more fun than oversteer.

          • Phil

Nothing more fun than driving past a busted Commodore that some numpty has oversteered into a gutter :)

          • Uranus

Yes Froddo but that’s were FWD is quicker no over-steer quicker cornering. Also you can’t forget that (no sure about the Scirocco) cars like Megane RS 250, Ford Focus RS don’t torque steer or understeer near as much.

And let’s not even go into the handbrake cornering with a FWD, not that is awesome fun!

          • Uranus

            Forgot to mention…

Doesn’t a REAL MAN handle any sort of car?

You scared of a FWD are you?

          • bangel

I have owned BMW’S with loads of oversteer , they go terminal when pushed , and as phil said hello gutter , never happens in FWD .

Always remember a crummer pulled out in front of me from a side street , bit wet foot flat to the floor i can beat you , bang 360 into a pole , so sad for the pole , one less piece of junk on the road .

          • Ford Fairlane

            FWD is a packaging/cost advantage,not a performance advantage.
The only people scared of FWD are racing drivers who want to go fast.

  • Pauly

The Scirocco R has the same engine from the Golf R, but the rest of the car is pulled from the Golf GTI.

    - Front Wheel Drive with XDS Differential.

    • word

Is it held together with the same duct tape as the GTI as well?

      • Gmac

You probably don’t own a GTI do you?

  • GTI_john

Amazing looking car! Il be placing my pre-order with Bayford Volkswagen over the next few days!

  • Golfschwein

It does look the goods in green, the same colour that the original was sold in.

  • Octavian

Nice, a special car that deserves to be sold here, finally, but for how much? If under $50,000, very nice indeed.

  • Jimmy

It is like the Golf R’s younger prettier sister. And the new number one on my list of desired cars.

  • andronicus

Drove one in Amsterdam. Meh, just like any other VW. Plus we get this years after everyone else. Thanks for that VW.

  • Jamie

I’d love to see a comparison drive with this and the Volvo C30

  • GTI

Seen these in the metal in Singapore, its a beautiful looking thing. May have to make it my next car.

  • anthony

Saw one recently in South Africa, and thought it looked wierd, not a fan…

  • T
