Morgan Threewheeler popularity may force production increase

The popularity of the recently launched Morgan Threewheeler could lead to the UK-based manufacturer increasing production to meet the vehicle’s unexpected high demand.

The £25,000 ($38,160) Threewheeler was unveiled in February, and since then Morgan has taken 480 deposits for the unique trike.

Speaking with Autocar at the vehicle’s UK launch last week, Morgan Motor Company boss, Charles Morgan, said the Threewheeler would push the brand beyond 1000 sales for 2011, up significantly from last year’s 740.

Mr Morgan explained the majority of sales had come from outside the UK, with many of its customers expressing a “greater confidence [in] products manufactured in the UK”.

He said the quirky Threewheeler would be a relevant sports cars for years and had the potential to become a timeless classic for the brand.

“Cars are too fast for normal use. This is fast but the real joy is in its acceleration – and it still does 50mpg (5.6 litres/100km).

“As a concept this could last 100 years and should be made for many years to come.”

The Morgan Threewheeler’s 1.8-litre engine produces just 75kW of power, although with an all-aluminium body weighing just 500kg it is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph (0-96.6km/h) in just 4.5 seconds and going on to a top speed of 185km/h.

It can be ordered in either Sport or Bespoke designs, as the war paint images in this story show.

The Morgan Threewheeler is not currently part of Morgan Cars Australia’s line-up, reportedly because it is over the Australian Design Rule’s 450kg maximum weight for three-wheeled vehicles.

What do you think of the Morgan Threewheeler? Would it be the ultimate track day rocket? And would you like to see them Down Under?
