Next-gen Saab 9-3 convertible built in Sweden?
May 8, 2008 by Alborz Fallah
The current SAAB 9-3 range is produced in two different countries, the sedan and sportcombi (wagon) are built in Sweden, and the convertible is built in Germany. But but news today from German newspaper the Handelsblatt indicates that the entire range of the next-generation 9-3s will be produced in Sweden as oppose to Germany.
The changes come amid a rethink for the next-generation 9-3, it will be smaller and hence based on a smaller platform. This results in a potential shift away from the Vectra platform to GM’s Delta platform.
Trollhatten in Sweden (the hometown of Saab) may therefore get back full production of the 9-3 range, which would make Saab fans happy. Given the uncertainty surrounding the cars production, the current 2009/10 release date has been delayed until 2011/12.

*****PRIMO!*****
GM should just do the right thing and sell SAAB off, and then Volvo [to be sold by Ford] can join together!
Cheers

The 93 convertible is built in Austria, not Germany

I don’t care if they build it on the moon.
GM world car with a different body – who cares?
To explain, if they built it on the moon maybe they could justify the price.
Frugal One, i could not see Volvo and Saab joining forces. There’ve always been a competitive company between the two. Its nearly saying like holden and ford are joining together, not exactly because their is a different type of meanness. The day Holden and Ford join together will be a weird and sad day for alot of peoples eyes and I could not see it happen anyway!
Yep Captain – driving it on the moon would be a hoot to. Really lightweight, but no grip. It would have to have airtanks to provide the 3rd element for combustion. LOL :)
To clarify:
Magna Steyr build the 93 convertible for Saab and their plant is located in Graz Austria, not Germany.
I think the confusion about Germany is that up until recently it was expected that the next gen 9-3 and 9-5 would be built in, dare I say it, Opel’s Russelheim plant in Germany.
Now it seems only the Epsilon based 9-5 will be built there with the 9-1 and 9-3 coming off versions of Delta at Trollhattan. The 9-4x SUV will come out of Mexico.
Wherever they build it, can they make it less ugly please?
Do you really think its ugly tom?
The 93 convertible is such a classical shape. Thank god it hasn’t gone to a hard top otherwise it would look like all the other CC’s out there.
its looks like the designer was high on crack when he fell out of the ugly design tree, systamatically hitting every branch on the way down.
^Sorry Tom but this is a nice looking car the 9-3 convertible. Way better loking than BMW’s 6 series Convertible!
Tom, maybe you need to visit your optomitrist….the sooner, the better. I get soooo many compliments on my 2008 Aero Convertible. It is one beautiful rag top and I absolutely love it!
