Toyota previews Melbourne Motor Show vehicles

The contingent of vehicles was shown to media in Toyota's top-secret Port Melbourne design centre.

Headlining the Toyota line-up was two of Toyota's latest hybrid crusaders. The Prius v (where 'v' stands for 'versatility') is a people mover-shaped vehicle, without the people mover capacity. With an official five-seat capacity, the versatility of the Prius v will extend to a large boot capacity, mimicking the size and shape of a much larger vehicle. It's anticipated that the Prius v will consume 5.0 litres/100km or less, making it the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class. The Prius v is expected to launch locally in 2012.

The other hybrid vehicle that will be seen at the Motor Show is the Prius c Concept vehicle. Aimed at young singles and couples, the Prius c will offer a spacious option for the environmentally concious folk after a green vehicle that doesn't have a design to match its cause. The Prius c is also expected to enter production in 2012. Both will sell alongside the Prius and both will feature the Prius driveline.

For those after non-hybrid options, Toyota also previewed the Toyota HiLux revision, Toyota Yaris revision and the all new Toyota FT-86 II concept.

Although Toyota didn't elaborate any further on the HiLux's specifications, it did say that safety specifications will improve. Other changes include adjusting positioning of the bonnet scoop on turbo diesel models, clear taillights, a new alloy roll bar and a new aggressive grille. The interior wasn't available for viewing on the day.

Arguably one of the most important vehicles in the Toyota range, the Yaris will also undergo aesthetic enhancements. Toyota expects the small car segment to represent an even greater percentage over the coming years, which is why it has paid such attention to detail with the Yaris. On sale in Australia later this year, Toyota claims the vehicle will be priced extremely competitively to make sure it continues to represent excellent value for money and quality.

Finally, the most exciting car of today's preview was the Toyota FT-86 II concept. Built as a joint project between Toyota and Subaru, the rear-wheel drive vehicle has reignited Toyota's passion for the segment, which has been neglected since the likes of the MR2, 2000GT, Supra and AE86 Corolla. The vehicle is expected to arrive in 2012. Toyota was tight lipped on specifications, only saying that it would be built as a car for purists.
