New Nissan 200sx (Silvia)?

We all know Subaru and Toyota are working on their entry level 'affordable-sportscar' so it makes sense for Nissan, which has made its name from making affordable supercars, to join the fight. Say hello to the next Nissan 200sx (Silvia).

The formula is simple, a light-weight, rear-wheel-drive, front engined, two-door sports coupe with a bit of power and good driving dynamics. Nissan has apparently been working on a 200SX replacement for a few years now, but recent news that Subaru and Toyota are building something similar, has given the project a sense of urgency.

Rumours suggest it will be around the same size as the last Silvia (S15) with dimensions estimated at 4350mm in length and 1750mm in width. It may also be based on the same platform as the 350Z given it has an identical wheelbase (2550mm).

Engine specifications remain unconfirmed but we anticipate everything from 2.0-litre naturally aspirated to a 1.8/2.0-litre turbo powerplants. Little else is known about the car except that it will be available by mid-late 2010.

With the new Nissan GT-R setting more records than a gramophone company, the Japanese giant will be able to use its halo car to sell cheaper models that share similar DNA.
