• Sumpguard

I’m a bit of a fan of Hyundai but I’m still not sure about the styling on this car. At least it isn’t generic I guess!

  • Old Dog

I quite like it, but I just can’t get over the door arrangement. This one won’t be on the shopping list.

  • Wiggler

Is this going to be in the next Transformers movie ?

  • V8

The dash looks very cheap. Cool exterior design though.

  • Chuck Simonds

The 3rd door is on the wrong side for me. I’ll have to walk around the car every time I want to put something in or take something out of the back seat…like my dog or a case of beer.

    • Henry

There Changing it for Australia the 2 door’s on the kerb and the drivers door on the road…

      • bobin

you misunderstood, he doesnt want to have to go to one side of the car to put stuff in the back seats and then go to the other side to get into the drivers seat.

        • Henry

Ohh opps my mistake yeah that would be a bit of a hastle…

    • bd

Most of the world auto markets will get the “5-door” Veloster (2 doors on each side).

  • gms

They’ll totally overprice this at around 30k. These should be 20k. They’d sell zillions of them!

    • BigRob

True, but even if they said $24,990 drive away, they’d have a deal with me i reckon

      • Damian

There’s not a chance in hell that it’ll be $24,990 driveaway. Have you seen how overpriced the upcoming Elantra is? This thing won’t sell for any less than $30k, with a $40k peak for the flagship.

        • http://caradvice OSU811

if it was $29,990 drive away on the road, so a list price of $26-$27k then it would be good value IMO

        • Phil

EH???? This is a small 103KW Hyundai we’re talking about!

          30K???? Going on to 40K????

Why on earth would anyone pay that when they could buy a Mini Cooper or Polo GTI for around 30K?

          • Kennyboye

12month wait on polo gti is why. Sucks doesn’t it?

          • Phil

Kenny, thats pretty irrelevant when this Veloster also, technically, has a waiting list since its not on sale yet.

There’s no waiting list for a Mini or Fiat 500. Other cars avaliable right now in the $30-$40K range include:

            BMW 118i ($39,000)
            Peugeot 307 GTi ($35,990)
            Alfa Romeo Mito ($29,990)
            Subaru WRX ($39,990)
            Citroen DS3 Sport ($35,990)
            Mercedes Benz B180 ($37,500)

I really do think Hyundai needs to cleanly undercut all of those on price to sell any Velosters.

        • Joel

The Premium elantra that they had at the car show has a listed price of $28,990 plus on-roads, so no where near $40k as you suggest..

Premium is the top model with full leather, heated seats, reverse camera, electric drivers seat etc etc…

P.S. the base model you claimed is $30k is actually $20,590 plus on-roads.

        • pc

I saw them in Seoul a month ago 21k Korean Won – well under 20K Aus…. the price will be sharp no doubt – 30k not a chance… PC

  • Jazrod

I’ve seen a bright green one getting around Campbelltown/Camden for the last two days . . . looks ok.

  • mjm

I like that Hyundai are trying something different here. Of course that will turn some people away, those who want every car on the road to look the same. But I applaude what they have tried.

Just for the record, I do largely like the look, but will have to see in the metal. I hope they calibrate, and price, it well for AU and they could be on a winner. Turbo any chance?

  • grrr

tbh i actually quite like the look of it

  • Mark

I don’t think Australian will welcome this car, another failure job by Hyundai ,

    • Peter

What are their other recent failures?

      • http://caradvice OSU811

Yes what are their recent failures?
Every new model has been a success in oz as far as I knew!!

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au kane

I think it looks cool shame the engine can’t back up what the styling suggests

    • idlebrain

Hmm, actually, 1.6 twin scroll turbo charged DI engine is coming next year. It produce 155kW and will come with the dual clutch transmission.

      • Smokin’ Jo

Then it will be worthy of the title “Veloster”.

  • SteveSV II

It’s funky & original but not sure on the 3 door arrangement.

Makes it look unbalanced & maybe on some occasions, make the driver feel like they’re a taxi in a way.

    • bd

Most markets (and all the right-side drive ones) will be getting the 4 door (+ hatch) Veloster.

  • Symbian

Well obviously this will be a ‘niche’ in the market.. Probably a good rival to the KIA Soul

  • Sprint

I will hate to explain all the time why I bought a car with 3 quirky doors.

  • Phil

“A great deal of enthusiasm for car lovers in Australia” ????

What part of Australia and what kind of car lovers are showing this supposed enthusiasm for a 103KW front drive Hyundai?

This Veloster actually has 2KW and 20NM less output than the outgoing Elantra yet is only slightly lighter.

“For its target audience….power output…are sure to please.” What is it with Caradvice and Hyundais? It seems caradvice just make up blurbs for the sake of praising Hyundai.

    • QAZ

dont thumb him down. he is only stating the truth.

    • bangel

True, whats the point , bit girlie like a celica , all glitz no go .

    • http://www.caradvice.com.au/ TheMaster

I don’t know about you, but I was excited about this car.

      • Phil

It probably has some appeal to trendy inner city people who have no real idea about cars, but want something small and stylish like a Mini or Fiat 500 but want to spend less.
But with people speculating a price tag of around 30K, they won’t buy the Hyundai.

With similar power to weight as a old Elantra sedan (or pretty much any car from that segment), sports car buyers won’t touch it either.

But Toyota somehow managed to sell a small number of Paseos for a list price of 25K in the 1990s, so whoever those people were (idiots) – they might trade in for this Veloster.

        • Toni

This is hilarious! Who would have thought an inanimate object would make men so bitchy!! Cracker!

  • Pauly

Will this be at the Motorshow next week? I would love to see this in the flesh!

    • nickdl

      It will.

  • Don Quay

Another strangely styled Hyundai, though better than some of their other recent efforts. The front 3/4 looks positively weird with the shape of the headlight and vent below it.
It will be interesting to read other reports of the ride and handling when they are tested locally. Maybe they are finally making some progress on the ride, steering and handling.

  • carlos

Overall it looks good, but I don’t like the green bit under the logo. they should get rid of it and make the chrome bit wider to wrap around the logo.

  • carlos

Overall it looks good, but I don’t like the green bit under the logo. they should get rid of it and make the chrome bit thicker to wrap around the logo.

  • Hung Low

Good to see them do something different, but it needs more poke.
Why do they persist with that type of interior plastics across all models, it looks cheap!

  • Dennis

I saw one on the road on Lane Cove Road in Sydney and drove past it to check out the front. It looks even better in the metal !!! I guess it was heading the hyandai austranlian headquarters in Macquarie. Very striking design and really stands out!!!

    • ClioRS200

      Blue right?
      Saw it at Macquarie Park.

      • Dennis

Yup !!! Looked super funky .

    • MattP

I saw the blue one on the M2 this morning, looks good on the road and happy to see the third door on the correct side for our market.

  • ClioRS200

    My comment was removed! Glitch?

I actually did see a Blue Hyundai Veloster at Macquarie Park (Syd) 3/4 days ago!

Must of been a press car 2 gents inside the car, it looks great in the flesh. I was quite stunned to see the car in aussie roads due to knowing it’s not yet available.

Ps: yes it was the Hyundai Veloster!

  • Tim

Ugly looking front end. Actually Koreans are starting to price their cars par with Japanese cars, thinking they are now in the game.

  • Phil

    How good are Hyundai’s
Korean made cars are leading the market now so much so they leave Toyota’s for dead

  • Troy

Um can everyone take a step back here and examine the facts? It’s a ‘Hyundai’ so regardless of the marketing spin it’s still going to have the on-road dynamics of a camper van.

  • James

Looks like a squashed frog… No doubt it will sell as all Aussies are quite silly…

  • Golfschwein

It’ll strike a chord, I’m sure. It only has to drive well enough and be priced well enough, as the styling will do the rest.

  • Andy

I reckon it looks quite good. Hyundai Aust has said it will sell here for approx $25,000 for the manual version. Yep, only 140hp engine but in a lightweight 1.2 tonne vehicle, it will certainly be quick! Also take into account that the manual version is rated at only 5.9litres per 100km (48mpg) so you will get a lot of distance for your buck! :-)

  • whally

the interiors could use some funky colours… bit boring with silver black combo… otherwise can’t wait for it to come to oz…finally a manufacturer that really cares…re…third door opening on the curb side… suspension tuned to aussie roads…well done hyundai.

  • bd

The front fascia looks a lot better with the grill crossbar painted black; also the Veloster Turbo will get a modified front (hopefully something a bit more clean).

All the markets with steering on the right side will get the 4-door (+ hatch) Veloster.

  • Catter29

Wow! This is probably the best looking Hyundai ever!

  • Kia-better

The styling too much like korean with too much of lines, wait until kia version of this with some of euro touch..then it’ll complete!

  • http://Yahoo SheryK

Love this car! When will we see it the US? Have to have it!

  • http://quinotomotif@gmail.com arjuna87

    good car

  • Bruce

I’ve Been Robbed! I Just Want A Nice 3 Door Hatchback With Decent Headroom And Now The Accent 3 Door Is Gone!!!

  • Bruce

See The High Lift Over For The Rear Hatch? This Will Limit Usability, This Car Has Sacrificed Usability For Style

  • Bo Derek

I am really excited about Veloster’s US launch. I do hope it will be available with leather heated seats and that it delivers on the 40 mpg EPA mileage real drivers. Comfortable interior sound levels is also a must. I know Hyundai will get handling and ride right. But the above are must haves for me

  • http://n/a Richard Brady

I will buy one as soon as they arrive at my local dealer.

This will be the 5th Hyundai purchased between my wife and me.

I have owned some exotic and fun vehicles since my first new car in 1970 and Hyundai has ticked all the boxes with us since 1998

  • Dave

Iv been looking for good car on fuel and sporty looking
    a fair price.Well i found it when i took the VELOSTAR, this 6 speed standerd for a ride.Wow I,m a belever yaya

  • Amanda

Where did you test drive one, I’m trying to find somewhere that has one…..

  • Stu

The Veloster certainly won’t win too many beauty prizes, but compared to vehicles like the current Chevy Camaro and virtually everything Chrysler/Fiat builds, the Veloster doesn’t look too bad. Most of Hyundai’s current lineup is cutting edge and quite handsome. No retro-style crap here!

  • Deangelis Ja

I think the look is fantastic, and to all the people saying it will be rubbish because it is a Hyundai  you are just so wrong ive driven all of the new range in trying to find a new car and they are by far the best cars on the market, You can not beat them on price, value and style atm.

Now seeing the USA manual is coming in at 18G i would be thinking ours will be very close im very tempted to wait for this car if the price is right if not then it will be a flop i see this car coming in at the very top model for 28G anything more and it will just price its self out of the market.

    • Mjpilbeam

Dealerships will have cars in the next week. The price will surprise everyone……..they will sell a bucket load of these! To the people who throw money away on overrated badging on their brand name cars………get your head out of the clouds, this company is flying!

  • McDrum

Toatally agree, pics dont do this thing justice, the price is great and there packed full of goodies.

  • NotYoungAnyMore

Have had a look at the Veloster – have a test drive this coming Saturday – not really impressed with the price $26,990 drive away.  Think it would be greater value at $25,000 drive away.  I know I am only quibbling about $2000 but it is all about justification – will probably wait for when this car is included in their sales.

  • NotYoungAnyMore

top of the range sells for $US22,550 – seems unfair

  • Rngold

Have a new green one I thought it was great value. Very smooth to drive and resonable power. The back is restrictive but suits us as i am retired. Had it for 3 weeks and love the long warranty. Drove a mates 1 day old VW golf GTD today. OK it had more power but no were as smooth and comfortable as the Veloster so i find the extra $15000.00 unjustified. The safety features are great as it is a new generation car.

  • Brian1909

have had this car for three weeks and i love it.  have the DCT with the pedal steering shifters (six speed) on the manual and this car can fly.  it’s not slow at all.  a little bumpy over ruff surfaces but other than that, it a fast, fun car to dive.

  • Macca

I have a sporty little black one…. plenty of power, rear parking sensors and camera, ipod and bluetooth connectivity and more. Very roomy inside, yes the downside is the headroom in the rear but if you don’t use the back seat for passenfgers all the time it’s not really an issue. And, the 3rd door idea is great  especially if you don’t use the rear seats regularly. I have had lots of really positive comments…..at the end of the day it’s my car and I’m happy with it .

    • Keithsmall80

Own the same little black plus model. Find when I’m driving at around 80klms and drops foot to overtake it revs for a few seconds before locking down the power. Any one having this?? All in all am OMG looking car and great to drive looks smoking in black.
