BMW M1 spotted?

May 5, 2008 by Alborz Fallah

Last week we saw photos of the BMW M1 concept, a tribute to mark the 30th Anniversary of BMW’s only mid-engined sports car, but it may be coming back! The photo below is currently doing the rounds online with the photographer claiming its the M1.

BMW M1 spotted

It is still uncertain whether or not this is a real photo or a photoshopped rendering, either way, we love it.

The photographer says the photo was taken in a hangar in Spain. Apparently it’s based on the same platform as the all-new M3 but to keep with tradition, it will be mid-engined.

If this is indeed the new M1, should BMW build it?

I wouldnt say it was pretty! Some people say that the front headlights look Alfa-Romeo like!

  2. Nige says:

    I LIKE it!
Certainly better looking than the R8

  3. Kinetic says:

Looks like a Audi R8 and a M3 did the dirty and this was the result.

  4. Prumm says:

Duck, Alfa Romeo headlights could only make it prettier :) Apparently its fake, the comments in Autoblog has the links to the background photo this car uses, but then again it could just be coincidence. PS why would a mid engined car need a \’powerdome\’? Is it front/mid or rear/mid or not-at-all/mid?

  5. George says:

Its definitely a fake (the wheels have the Mazda logo on them) but still looks good.

Wouldn’t surprise me if BMW were working on a new M1 though, especially after the BMW M1 Homage concept, these things are usually meant to test the waters rather than just “pay tribute”.

  6. Mitchell Oke says:

Fake or not, that looks stunning!!

  7. Mitchell Oke says:

Ah, tis a fake. The Mazda wheels are definitely the big giveaway.

    Such a shame :(

  8. Jase says:

The lights are a cross between an EVO and M3. Undoubtly a fake!

  9. anthony C says:

we all know its a fake. there isnt any doubt.. but come on. it looks cool

  10. Alex says:

If this car was put on the market, I WOULD buy one. However I liked the one from the other day better. That could have been a real design benchmark for BMW. All the flame surfacing is to current generation but the one from the other day as timeless.

  11. Myke says:

Whether or not its fake, it still looks better than the concept M1.

  12. BMWsauberF1 says:

stunning! assuming its the real deal perhaps a contender for the R8? it would make sense.

  13. btto says:

after going through some AUDI R8 pics on google, this is most likely a photoshopped pic of an R8…Very well done, but its shape is too closely resembles….

  14. greenmatt says:

Definitely a chop, bits and pieces from everywhere. Not a bad job though.

  15. Fred says:

They really need a true sports car. If the R8 received such great acclaim, then the better brand should, well, do even better.

  16. Duck says:

I still reckon the Audi R8 looks better!

  17. Duck says:

Prumm, I mean the whole body doesnt look pretty, specially the rear! The alfa lights on alfa romeo are nice (only nice touch on car).

  18. Fred says:

The original M1, like the R8, has, coincidentally, Lamborghini styling and ‘mid-engineness’ in it, but I doubt the successor will have any resemblance to the Audi-owned Italian. I hope it doesn’t go the 6-Series way though.

  19. No Name says:

Well cool. Mazda wheels, nah don’t get it. Yep no doubts it will get built but it needs to be soon at time to build big engined cars is running out, what with the Eurocrats spoiling the fun of the motor manufacturers.

  20. Simon says:

Its a fake. Photochopped from an R8.. See the C pillar and below, R8 filler cap..

    Wheels are mazda concepts..
    Front headlights look like Lancer..
Can see a “light spot” at the rear left off the fender..
The background is from a Ford GT40 promo pic, Flipped and darkened.

Still, a decent job @ photochopping.

AS for looks, I think the concept M1 looked far better.

  21. Chet says:

You can bet that when the real new M1 hits the streets I’ll want to be there to take an “up close and personale” look.

  22. Erik Brennan says:

The M1…such a brilliant car during its championship years..to re-do it is definitely a brilliant idea…now the looks are hmmm..you gata keep in mind the first M1 in production had Lamborghini design the look of the car, and for the new one to kinda mock a lambo makes sense, but the back end i think is a little out there, way to far from bmw’s look for me….front end is right on for a modern day look, it could look wayyy better, and if this is photochopped word up hell of a job…

They shud def build it!!! GORGEOUS

  25. Dave says:

That car looks sick.. Thats what BMW needs a high end sports car to shut up Mercedes Benz lovers… This would be a nice SL fighter or even CL… Very nice….
