By George Skentzos |

Nissan has announced its GT-R super car has shaved more than nine seconds off its previous Nurburgring lap record.

Surprisingly this time was not set in the highly anticipated V-Spec model, but rather a standard base model Japanese specification GT-R.

“At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nurburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds,” said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R.

Chief test driver Tochio Suzuki completed a lap of the Nurburgring in below seven minutes 30 seconds to beat the previous record of 7:38, reinforcing the Nissan GT-R’s position as among the fastest mass-production cars in the world.

“We set out to build a multi-performance super car accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”

Deliveries of the all-new GT-R began in Japan last year, with Australia to follow within the next 12 months.

i think the zonda is only 2 seconds faster

  • Kris

Imagine the V spec! Probably be 7:25 or under…making it the quickest production car around the ring !

I take my hat off to Nissan, amazing job guys!

Its the benchmark supercar not just for Japan but the WHOLE WORLD!!

    Cheers,

There are fast cars in a straight line and then there are cars that are fun everywhere

dsefently a supercar on a budget!! “unless you live in australia and pay a hefty premium for reasons unknown”

but hey! to the rest of the world. this is gold!

    • James Cortez

You are absolutely right Anthony. We all pay a hefty premium in Australia for wahtever reasons / excuses and for car lovers / enthusiasts: That S****!!

    They’ve out-porsched Porsche.

Never really doubted it… still its a shame MOST here cannot afford one without a mortgage on it hehe. But for its practicality and performance.. wow.. its almost worth going through all that trouble.

yes, V-Spec GTR should even be faster….

  • Bavarian Missile

I know its cool and fast, but its still not a Porsche.

Porsche is the benchmark Frugal Nissan are just meeting it,finally! Will there be a winner out of this? Tit for Tat,I think!

Only 1 second (and a bit) faster for the Zonda F which lapped in 7:27.82, the hi res version of the clip at Supercarmovies.com is worth a look too, here’s the youtube version… well it’s not because posts with URLs seem to get lost in a moderation queue, so copy and paste this:

Congratulations Nissan. What a way to win credibility; to walk the walk, without the preceeding trash talk. For the money, this car would have to be the best motoring buy on the planet, and possibly in history. The numbers are mind blowing. Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo, etc, stick that up your yuppy asses. Nissan just proves that 50% of the “big 3′s” asking price is for the little plastic horse or Bull, double sided taped to the bonnet!

im sure i read that porsche did have something up their sleeve that they were preparing, because they knew this GTR would take some beating.

im feeling that the GTR’s glory wont last too long before porsche sticks its chest out again.

but i still love this thing.
have they confirmed pricing for OZ yet?

  • Bavarian Missile

    Good moaning Andrew…….I think I read $160,000.

  • Andrew M

i think this is a great car, but as i already assumed, if i were to spend this sort of money on a vehicle, i would find it hard to not go for the porsche.

    • topdog

I too would love to go for the porsche but the prob is thay cost 3 times the money the GTR is if you wont to be anywere near the GTR that is > so for the most of us its not possible but at least with the GTR you can obtain one

      • ABMPSV

I still go for a Porsche too. It cost yes $90,000. Can it do it for 24h?? In May is the 24h Nurburgring race. Porsche is always doing well there it last the 24h. Let see if the GTR can do it!!

        • James Cortez

Anybody comparing the R35 GTR to the Porsche 911 – in Australia – must not have brain. The Porsche costs heaps more. The GTR is a relatively affordable supercar made by Nissan to appeal to those who can’t fork out more money. Porsche(s) are made as supercars with lesser regards to affordability.

  • Bavarian Missile

Me too…….better pose value too yet harder to get let out in traffic as Clarkson would say!

  • Joober

ur joking right… 160k, whats the equivilent porsche? and how does it match up… a boxter? performance wise where does it fit against the GTR? and looking at the price in the US… its a steal for a supercar.

The GTR is more pure as a drivers car, sure its not that brand wow factor as a Porche but the people buying this wont typically think of ‘look at me’ as first choice more likely ‘look at me beat you’.

As for beating the GTR, if you can make a half a million dollar car, it shouldnt be hard for porche to make a faster one, but let them try to build something that they can sell at the same price as the GTR, I don’t think Porche will be ready to do.
