2012 Suzuki Swift Sport 100kW & Paddles

By Alborz Fallah |

The new Suzuki Swift Sport is expected to go on sale in Australia by early next year.

With the previous-generation Swift Sport gathering a cult following around the world (thanks in part to its performance in junior world rally championship) the second-generation Swift has been begging for a sportier version since its launch in February.

Sources inside Suzuki told CarAdvice the next-generation Swift Sport would be offered in a lightweight three-door hatch body type only and produce at least 100kW of power.

The new 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport, which will have to compete with strong competition from major stakeholder Volkswagen’s Polo GTI as well as upcoming hot-hatches from Ford’s Fiesta family, has got a lot of pressure to perform.

CarAdvice believes the new sporty Swift (which we would love to see called Swift GTI) will be available with either a six-speed manual (as opposed to five for the previous model) and also an automatic with paddle-shifters, which should help increase sales significantly.

Details of the engine are still unconfirmed but we believe it will be a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with at least 100kW. Match that to a lightweight body and a good gearbox and the new Sport begins to sound rather good.

Swift fans can see early glimpses of the next Sport by having a look at the Swift S-Concept at the upcoming Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne which runs from July 1-10.

    drool drool drool omg…

  • talk then think

    Please turbo it Suzuki!

  • j

Keep the Recaros and rear diffuser in the production model, please!

    • bob

Agree, except for the rear diffuser. Or at least I pray you make it an optional extra. I’m too old to have a rear diffuser, but still like the car =)

  • Al Juraj

Add 30kW and price it within 25K and we’ve got ourselves a superb small hatch.

  • Mark

Keep those butt huggin recaros, have IRS, Four wheel disks and a wrath of aftermarket tuning parts and I’m sold

  • rentakeyboard

It will be interesting to see what Holden does with 1.4turbo (103kw) with Barina

    • Josh

      The daewoo would fall apart…

      • rentakeyboard

Except the all new model out in the 3rd qtr will be a Chev.

        • Simon

So the Chev won’t fall apart?

        • TechEd

          Chev outside US = Daewoo

          • troy

            like a chev aveo??

            which IS also a daewoo

  • Alexander

Is that auto a torque converter auto? Why not VW’s DSG? Or even a CVT with false ‘gears’ and paddles like the Kizashi? Both would be a more efficient option…

    • Charger

because they want it to last more than 30k before it fails, becomes noisy etc

      • Alexander

Is that in relation to a CVT or DSG?

        • Jim Sim

The beautiful DSG’s in VW’s i’d imagine. They’re second to none….. In breaking.

          • shag

My Golf GTI with DSG has done 70,000km without a failure so stop talking crap.

          • Thrillhouse

CVT’s have a bad habit of exploding as well.

          • Jim Sim

            Wow, 70,000kms? Want a cuddle?

          • Charger

well when you get to 100k and you have a $6500 bill for a reco get back to me.

          • Able

            It’s why you buy a manual ;)

  • Mr Gaspo

It would be hilarious if the paddle shift auto was a 4 speeder. What a hot little car… Good move Suzuki!

    • Alexander

That’s why I’m afraid it will be a torque converter… Theoretically it could be an 8 speed simulated gear CVT, or a 7 speed DSG…

  • http://caradvice OSU811

I always did like the previous model sport!
one of the best handling FWD cars available!

    • Yeah

After the Renault Megane RS 250 and Clio RS 200 and Focus RS/XR5.

  • Dieppe

unless they get a min 130kw…sorry to say, it’s just like the current swift sport, it’s all show and NO GO…

  • Yeti Man

Stick with the current formula and add 6 speed + small power.

  • CRS200

Sukuki could of been more original, this thing is a complete imitation of the Renault Sport Clio RS 200.

    The seats the rear defuser…

    • Dave

yeah heaven forbid, i mean how many cars have a rear diffuser, front sport bar, and OMG mag wheels, whats left for them to do

  • G

I could do without the over the top grills behind the wheels and in rear bumpers. Tacky.

  • Thomas

100KW, wow, how can anyone control all that power? lmao. Get me a clio RS200, Fiesta ST or Polo GTI anyday.

  • Richard

As a current Swift Sport owner who constantly surprises owners of expensive cars and motor bikes on the twisty bits of the Old Pacific Highway all I want is a 6 speed manual gear box, 100+ KW and a Sub $25,000 price (on the road).
    Affordable bliss!!!

    • http://caradvice OSU811

Agreed all it really needs is a close ratio 6sp box and a little more power and torque over the previous version say at least 110kw to combat the extra weight!!

      • http://caradvice OSU811

Have to keep cost down to $24,990 on road max!!!

  • Richard

PS Don’t change spring and shockabsorber rates or wheel travel as one of the great strengths of the existing car is its ability to deal with really rough roads (common in Australia)at speed without the suspension ‘crashing’ or the car skipping and still have a reasonable ride. Its also great on dirt roads with well judged stability control settings.
Many sports cars set up for European roads fail miserably on our fun ‘back’ roads.

  • Tommy

If its only producing around 100kw, i wouldnt be impressed. The 4age designed in the 80s made that much power. A figure around 140-150kw would make a great competitor to the civic type r

  • RdS

great update to the already fantastic current model; but still disappointed with the output. not everything is about power, but id like the motor to be a little more worked. Honda and Toyota were making more than that from 1.6L NA’s 20years ago. sure more strict emissions standards have come into play, but theres ways around that.. just a bit of tech!

  • kg

    chav mobile it is.

  • Daniel

    At least 100kW? Sounds juicy.

  • darkone

ditch the flappy paddle auto and leave it manual, call it swift gti(always wanted one of those)and let me know when its on sale.best looking hot hatch since the original gti.Shame about the colt ralliart not being sold anymoe.

  • troy

itll be 30 grand folks, dont hold your breath for it under that.

  • LOS-MIC

It sounds good so far,I have the swift sport. It really is a great handing little car. All it needed was a 6 speed gear box cruise control and a less cabin noise and it would be perfect. The new look, looks great!
Now add all these things together and it’ll sell like hot cakes!!

  • kirsty

plz plz make it turbod… leave the recaros in it and you got a sale ;.. plus make it a cheapie to buy and ill so be lining up for it

  • Mackpac
