Bob Lutz former GM boss releases new book: Car Guys vs Bean Counters

Former Vice Chairman of General Motors, Bob Lutz, has released a new book titled Car Guys vs Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Busniess. This is his second book and it provides his opinion on the American car industry today, and what he did to change GM during his near-10-year stint with the company.

Lutz openly expresses that he is a genuine car enthusiast and says American car designers and builders are producing better cars than the Japanese rivals. In his book he goes through the steps GM, and other US companies, had to take in efforts to improve their products.

Lutz not only led GM for just under 10 years, he also worked for Ford and Chrysler, but he still claims GM has the edge today. Lutz, however, does admit that the other US companies have great products too.

The book has, so far, received varying ratings. In a recent report, Reuters said,

"The book serves as a clarion call for all U.S. manufacturers to focus on their products rather than quarterly numerical targets."

While a review by an Amazon.com commenter Loyd E. Eskildson said,

"Lutz is not afraid to name names. His first target is America's handling of the original oil crises - with increased CAFE requirements, instead of raising the gas tax. The unintended result, per Lutz, is that Japanese manufacturers did not have to do anything to meet the new requirements, while American firms incurred high expenditures."

Car Guys vs Bean Counters was released last week. It sounds like a great read for American car industry followers and car enthusiasts in general.
